Lug nut advise please

I purchased a set of 17 inch SEMA TRD wheels months ago along with everybody else during the 40% sale. Finally getting around to mounting tires on them. As I have the steel wheels that came on the SR I've searched around a few threads trying to discover what lug nuts I'll need to make the transition. Anyone have any recommendations or experience? I'd like to order the lugs this week so I can move ahead with the upgrade. Thanks for the help.

Factory lugs from a sport or off road will work just fine. I would not trust anything but Toyota lugs with the SEMA wheels and your tpms won't work from the steel wheels,FYI.

 

Steel wheels and aluminum wheels have different lugs.

 

Steel wheels usually have acorn lug nuts. You want the flat lugs with a flange.

 

“Sema” wheels are the same as any alloy aftermarket wheel. Gorilla nuts are good. Toyota locking nuts are good. Any nuts are good just buy ones that are tapered/concaved.

 

If you get the gorilla ones, I would stay away from the splined version. The key is super flimsy and annoying to keep track of. It almost makes it more difficult to remove your wheels with an impact because the extra Olay between the socket and the key absorbs the hit from the impact.

I've had these for three years and yes, the key to spline slop will cause the lug nut to stick inside the key, but it's worked really well with my Method Wheels with their deep socket and minimal clearance on the wall of the wheel. The key has a very thin wall. I keep the key in a safe place. I just can't remember where that is right now.

These are the wrong nuts. I have heard them referee to as acorn nuts, tapered etc.

The bevel on the stud end sits in steel wheels. These are very bad for aluminum wheels. The aluminum wheels need a nut to fill the space of the hole.

 

Anyone tell you that you have HUGE pair of nuts?

 

One of us is wrong. The nuts you are recommending are meant for steelies I believe.

No truck nuts here. I just use a shackle.

The Sema wheels use factory aluminum wheel lug nuts. I don't know if the steel wheels use the same lugs as aluminum. Check the notes in the link below.

There is a difference between the alloy and steel wheel TPMS, but you can turn your steel wheel TPMS 180° and it will work on alloy wheels.

I just went through this. Get the lugs for alloy wheels. I searched online and found them for cheap at some random Toyota dealer and the matched the price at my local dealership. 90084-94002 is the part number. If you don’t need them right away, there is a seller on eBay who sells them for cheap if you can wait a week or so on shipping.

Are OEM 12x1.5 SD lugs?

 

12.5x1.5 TP - yes
SD - no

 

Unless they've changed something, this is only because the seal is different (the steel wheels are thinner) and they can be reused if you buy the new seal and nut kit for aluminum wheels. It's a pretty common item as you're supposed to replace it when you replace the tires.
