Using a cutoff wheel...

I'm planning on installing suspension this weekend. I have an icon AAL and new UCA that I will be using a cutoff wheel to install. The rear driver's side will be shooting sparks out all around the gas tank...is there any safety considerations with all the sparks? Every video I've seen is the person going to town without a care in the world. I've never used one before and would prefer not to blow up my house so please let me know.

 

What exactly are you cutting? On a 2018 Id think youd be able to get all the hardware out no problems. I used a sawzall with a carbide blade on my 04 to get around the flammability issue.

 

If you are worried about it there are welding blankets you can buy. It seems like most people that are worried about it use at least a piece of cardboard to block the sparks. The sparks are not hot enough to pierce the fuel tank, but if you are grinding for a long time on something they could build up enough heat to do some damage.

 

You have to cut off the brackets of the overload to install the AAL. I am just going to cutoff the UCA bolts in the front instead of messing with bending all of the sheet metal.

Cardboard works? Problem solved. We moved one week ago and have more cardboard than I know what to do with!

 

It seems to work for most people, obviously keep an eye on it and if you are turning it black and it's starting to catch on fire.... You might not be using the grinder correctly.
