All this talk about spares has me wondering if the backspacing is the same on the steel spare as the pro wheels on my truck. Anyone know?

I think your Coopers are closer to an AT tread. I can definitely feel the lugs through the truck when I slow to a stop or take off with the KM2s. It’s not a big deal though just a characteristic of the tread being spaced apart.

Yeah, mine are more of a hybrid. I had some BFG muds on a jeep years ago. I loved them, but they were a bit noisy.

Interesting, I run the 255/85R16 in the Toyo MT's they measure at 33.5" and it fits fine under; no contact with anything. I guess all to do with the slight variances in our vehicles off the line.

Most of the comments he made that appear negative would be applicable to any mud terrain tire; regardless of size. Also, the speedometer being off is based on the diameter of the tire, so a 255/85R16 and a 285/75R16 both being approx. 33" will make the speedometer off by about the same margin.

The primary benefits of a 255/85 is going to be clearance associated with a taller tire without having to cut, lift and change wheels out. MPGs, ride quality, on road performance, noise are all going to be the same problem whether you go with a 255/85 mud tire or a 285/75 mud tire. Maybe if you can find a Class C mud tire in the 285/75 class you could reduce (not eliminate) some of those problems; as far as I know all the 255/85's are class E.

My Toyo MT's (255/85R16) netted me approx. 1.5" to 2.0" of lift (loaded stock tire measured between 29" and 30"; Toyo's measure right at 33") and a far better off-road tire. All for the price of 5 tires ($1,500), rather than having to buy a lift kit ($500-$10,000), new wheels ($500-$3,000), new tires ($1,200-$2,000) and then cut and mold fenders/body panels/frame ($?) all to still probably rub.

I got the KM2s from Ebay. They came to about $950 (free shipping) for all 5 and the install was about $115.

Thought the same thing after I got the new spare mounted and was putting it back in. Would be a bastard to find out it didn't fit way out on a trail. FYI my ST Maxx 255 spare fit. When I added my RCI rear bumper, I had to adjust the new hitch mount, but stock was fine.

just found it in this thread (assuming it's accurate)...
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fj-steel-tacoma-spare-comparison-question.510355/

in my note's i've got the following:
    upload_2019-6-27_12-18-11.jpg

so that means if the 16" Steel Spare is +30mm offset then the tires will be 5mm (<1/4") closer to the inside of the truck than the stock OR tires

so <1/4", hopefully we'l be fine?

Can't believe I didn't think of that before getting the 255/85/16 spare.....have to update my little table now....

Should be ok. Stocke tires are 5mm wider on each side already, although not as tall. I will look later and see if I can eyeball it.

Sport instead of OR but... Pulled the trigger last week. Thanks to everyone that shared great info on this thread! Haven't really flexed the suspension fully yet but no rubbing so far with SOS sliders and front/mid skids on stock suspension. Looks so much better than the 265/7020190628_181853.jpg

Over the weekend I went on a road trip. 255/85/16 Cooper ST Maxx I was driving 70MPH on the speedometer, but on the GPS it read faster 75MPH. I was under the impression that it would have been 5 MPH slower since the tires are larger.

And BTW with these 10 ply tires the ride is so much smoother over the bumps, The truck feels so much different, like a different truck altogether. I should have done this a long time ago.

Nope, larger radius takes you farther for a given rotation. Good thing no cops were around!

    Correct, your speedometer reads slower.

Each revolution of the tire goes further than stock, but your truck doesn’t know there has been a change. It still sees “one revolution” and does the math to produce a speed. That’s where something like the Hypertech comes in. It intercepts the signal and applies a correction factor depending on your new tire size.

GPS is independent of your truck or tires and will give you your true speed.

I have very similar results to yours, to be expected!

As if changing your speedometer actually changed the emissions equipment on the car.

Realistically, that is a catch-all, sold that way because in Cali most mods are considered illegal until cleared, whereas most of the rest of the nation stuff is legal until deemed illegal. Hence why everything causes cancer there, because you have to prove it doesn't in order to not put the label on a product.

I agree with you and am grateful that California requires products to be safe prior to presenting to the people as opposed to letting injuries manifest and then pulling from the market (or adding warnings).
