Does the tow package charge a camping trailer battery?

Have a 2018 OR w/tow package. Also have an rpod 190 and am wondering if I have the trailer plugged in and towing is the truck charging the campers on board battery? If not, what would I need to do that? Thanks.

 

IF YOU ARE USING A 7PIN CONNECTOR THEN YES YOU ARE CHARGING THE RPODs BATTERY. Sorry, not yelling it out.

 

Look at the pin diagram on the connector attached to the truck you will see which is battery power.

 

It should also have a 3-way refrigerator with 12V mode that you can use while towing. Although, 12V operation might be worse than on 110V or propane, and it WILL drain your battery in 3 hours or so if you leave it on 12V setting without being hooked up to shore power or a tow vehicle. From here.

So I’m seeing everything in that diagram on my plug in cover diagram but the 12V portion. So maybe it doesn’t charge the battery?

 

Two of the pins show + and -... I assume that's them.

 

Pretty sure the + sign is the 12v in the above diagram. And the - sign would be the ground.

 

Also, realize the orientation of the plug in the diagram vs how the truck plug is. The protruding part of the plug is on the top in the diagram but on the right for our trucks.

They are showing the same thing.

 

The + and the - are the 12v hot and ground.

 

It'll "trickle" charge off your alternator. Does it with my t@g.

 

Awesome thank you. This makes much more sense. Let’s say I was camping somewhere without shore power and the rv battery was dead and I needed to bring in the rv slide, could I just plug into the Tacoma, start it up and it would power the slide in?

 

I would think so, but I don't pull trailers or have much experience with campers. In any case, I'd have the truck running to not risk killing BOTH batteries.

 

The only thing you would want to verify is whether or not that pin is always hot (or on) in out trucks. Some manufactures are, others are off of the key, aka that pin will only charge your camper when the key is on in the truck

If 3rd gen Tacomas are always on, you might want to consider unplugging the trailer when at camp, to avoid running both batteries down

 

Yup I always unplug the trailer when parked for a little bit.

 

Should be good once it's plugged into the truck, I would keep it running because the slide probably draws quite a bit..
Look at a little solar kit to keep the trailer topped up, here is our 90w keeping everything full while camping;

 

Looking at a solar kit at harbor freight for $150 for 100w. The rpod has a solar plug in. What would this power on the rpod? Thanks.

 

Does anyone know how much power you can draw via that pin? I looked up the fuse box diagram and it shows a 30 amp fuse (at least on a 2nd gen), seems like a lot.

Solar charger is a good idea. Though you have the 12V+ lead cheap ass Toyota (knowing full well most Taco buyers never tow) used a tiny wire gauge that has so much voltage drop by the time it reaches the end of the truck it will not properly charge trailer batteries, especially because most are deep cycle.
