The exterior is over sized, I agree...the interior, however, is small as hell.

I did away with my George Costanza wallet many years ago and it did wonders for my knees and hips on long drives no matter the vehicle. I don't have any issues with knee pain in my Tacoma although my seat covers add a little more cushion which might help.

You are a filthy liar. The back seat might as well have been part of the bed. No humans can fit back there

Well that's just midsizes in general. The Colorado and Nissan aren't better. I can stuff two buddies back there alright.

I was getting pain in my knees as well and my ass would go numb from driving my 8 year old 2nd gen tacoma for as little as 30 minutes. Didn't happen when it was new. I tried the spacers to raise the back of the seat but did not find that it helped and returned the seat to normal. Eventually I got Classio seat covers (unrelated to the knee thing) and by coincidence, I noticed I could drive much longer without pain or numbness. Like 2-3 hrs instead of 30 minutes. So I assumed it was the seat padding was no longer supportive and the padding in the covers was giving me the support I needed again.

Also found that ergonomics are important. Like others have said, sit square and keep both feet straight. I tended to drive with my left knee bent, left foot close to the seat and right ankle twisted to the right, heel by the brake, tow by the gas pedal. Was not good after a while. Maybe you are just sitting differently in the new truck. Have you tried longer drives in another vehicle so you can be sure it's the new truck and not just a coincidence that you got a new truck at the same time that your body started showing its age. I also added inflatable lumbar support behind the seat covers which helped my wife a lot as the passenger seat never had lumbar.

Are we talking crew cabs? The back seat in my brother’s GMC Canyon has a LOT more room than my Tacoma. GM midsizers offer noticeably more leg room and headroom in the back. I can’t speak for Nissan’s, though.

I'm saying compared to a fullsized trucks rear bench, the improvements in rear row space is negligible. My fiancés brother has a canyon and with all this truck, anything more than a 30 minute ride is uncomfortable.

None of the trucks front rows bother me though.

I’m sorry OP is having knee pain issues.
After reading OP’s post, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the movie ”The Jerk” staring Steve Martin.

i had right side thigh pain so bad i couldn't drive the truck after about 90 minutes. it was consistently that bad. felt like the flatness of the seat was pushing up into my right thigh making it super uncomfortable and then numb.

i went to a local upholstery shop and had them modify the seat by carving a bucket into it. half a day and $200, and it's a totally fully comfortable seat for me now. 50k miles on it and i haven't had pain since two years ago. but, of course, YMMV and this may not even be your problem or solution.

Knee pain from sitting in that position is usually caused by patelar instability from IT band inflammation... often refereed to as "runners knee" but effects non-runners too.... I had similar knee pain but it was from my Lexus not my Tacoma, sold the Lexus literally because of this, it was a 6spd manual and I was too tall for the car so ackward sitting position + working the clutch = IT band inflammation -> patelar instability -> knee pain.

Added two exercises to my routine which got rid of 90% of it side leg lifts (start with no weight then as you get strong add resistance bands) and "bridge pose" (hold pose with both legs at first, then go to one leg after a week or two)
    1.jpg 2.jpg

This got me back to skiing, hiking, slacklining etc... Try these two exercises everyday for a few weeks at the very least you'll get strong inner legs.

I continued these exercises for 6 months and still do them regularly, but I could still sort of FEEL the inflammation in my IT band at times, didn't hold me back though. What finally fixed it 100% was a little extreme... full vegan diet, all it took was 10 days as a vegan and knee problem completely disappeared among a ton of other health benefits. But you don't necessarily need to go that extreme, I would however try cutting out dairy, processed grains and sugar for a few weeks and see how your body reacts, all of those cause low grade inflammation in addition to just being bad for you so again won't hurt, can only help, and you might be shocked by the results, I certainly was.

Either way hope you fix it bro! Getting old sucks I also just turned 33 :(

A little bit of this, a little bit of that...
OP. I have a 2nd Gen and yes after a few years began to feel pain on my right medial collateral ligament (MCL) area. The pain only flared up when driving my truck. Went to the Orto, got an MRI, and found I had a small tear in my medial meniscus that was aggravated by my driving position in the Tacoma.
Never felt the pain under "normal" life activities.
