Dealer said can't diagnose heavy cabin vibration because I have aftermarket wheels and tires

shouldn't you be talking to Discount Tire instead of dealing with the Toyota dealership on why the truck vibrates with new tires/rims they installed

 

It vibrates with all wheels and tires, including Toyota's wheels, and it didn't do it from the beginning. Started a few months ago.

Hey man could be worse, I'm looking for a new truck and I shopped a bunch of dealers untill I got the price I wanted. I put down a $1000 deposit because they had to special order the truck the way I wanted. Long story short I signed a purchase order and put a $1000 down and was promised a new truck in about 3 months. About a month goes buy and the dealer calls and said they can't honor the price of the truck that I had a signed purchase agreement on and wanted $1000s more for the same truck after we signed. I went back and got my deposit back. I hate Toyota dealers and all the shitty games they play.

 

OP, go rent a tacoma from another dealership and throw the wheels on yours for them to test the truck. I did this when I had to pass MD state inspection because mine stick out past my fenders. Dealer was never the wiser that I did it. It cost me $120 or so but cheaper than trying to find wheels/tires to swap elsewhere.

 

How am I supposed to rent a new truck from another dealer?

Oh right. Honestly it's not worth the bother. I'll try another dealer for the repair first if the alignment doesn't make it better. I've been down this road before, and not again. NOT spending money out of pocket doing Toyota's diagnosis for them. F them.

 

Most dealers rent from their service department. I just drove up there with my wife and said I was considering buying a new tacoma and wanted to rent one to see if I like it. It was a brand new tacoma with like 300 miles, stickers still on the tires. Inspection didn't care what I did after they inspect, so I drove it home, swapped them on, drove it back and they signed my paper. Went home swapped them back and took the truck back. Obviously the costs will run up if the dealer says oh crap yea your truck needs a lot of work and then you're stuck with a rental for weeks.

If you put vehicle on lift and run the truck can you determine driveline vibration that way? even dismount the wheels and do this.

 

99.9% of vibrations like you described with aftermarket wheels that you haven't made any suspension modifications to is with either the wheels or tires. Road force balancing is a joke and lends zero credibility to your issue. You need to take it back to discount and let them tell you that it isn't the wheels or tires.

A vibration at 70 is a harmonic vibration and that isn't typically a drive line cause. It is wheels or tires. A drive line vibration will be constant and you will feel it when you accelerate with increasing intensity that will drop when you let off the gas. Brake vibrations occur when you are on the brakes. A wheel alignment won't fix a vibration. There really isn't a whole lot to the diagnosis especially if it is as bad as you say.

 

I only read the first and last page, but did you try rotating them to see if that changes anything?

If not I’d try that rental idea. That’s a good one.

I’m sure any dealer you take it to is going to say the same thing. I would.

 

Again, you guys didn't read everything. It does it on two separate sets of wheels and tires, including TRD Pro wheels I bought new from this dealer. And yes, the vibration DOES get worse under power, which I told the manager, which he apparently ignored.

 

I regularly rotate my tires. I did not do a special rotation for this issue.

Not as of yet. I suppose I could try that since it's free, after I see what the dealer says.

 

Have you spoken to the Toyota Regional rep yet and explained that the dealership doesn't want to perform warranty work for an issue you have identified?

If you bought the wheels from the dealership and they are genuine parts I don't see the issue with them.

 

OP, have you tried an oil change?
