That is the OEM intake cam. Where I stopped, after checking lash on each lobe. Needs buckets swapped on 5, to tighten them up.

 

I thought the lobes looked a little thin/pointy..

Technically never, based on how you asked the question I understand what you mean though.

Guess that depends on how many miles your engine has. How hard you run it, and viscosity of oil.

On these engines, most people don't unless they are getting into them for some reason which influences the need to check. These are not "adjustable" like other engines. Those types would or should be checked probably around 75k on a DD, and sooner on a aggressively used engine. Some race engines are checked after each race.

 

That. And there's also the idea that it's his first vehicle.
I never met a kid that was given his first vehicle that actually took care of it. Corolla sounds like a better starter car anyway. Find him a stick shift 04-08. They're cheap and dependable.

Cams.

I've heard back from Kiel this morning. I'm clarifying a few things with him before I post it all up. (Y'all are gonna be stoked tho.)

I'd asked him for more info on the cams. Stock specs and such. Here's what I got:

"We don’t have any dyno stuff for the 1GR cams, nor do I have the stock cam specs handy, but I have yet to see anything from Toyota that was bigger than 200° @ .050”.

These didn’t quite go through the same development process as all of our other cams. We are getting an engine to do a bit more measuring for when we bring out the catalogue range etc.. But we do know that they go well.

Ultimately they are a direct acting DOHC engine (per bank) and there’s nothing surprising or difficult about cam design for that setup "

Currently in the process of lashing all of the intake buckets. Once I get the measurements for all 4 cams, I'll place an order for new ones. Not yet sure how many I will need, as I have a lot of spares. Not even sure of the price of those either. Hopefully I don't need too many though.

 

Are the spares something to part with?
