I'd run the heck out of that Tacoma until it died. I'm guessing it has a lot more than you think.

Everyone I know who pulls a camper started small. If you are going to trade may as well go big now rather than trade again later on.

Trust me. Stay away from Newer Diesels by all manufacturers. The new emissions requirements are ridiculous and are a nightmare in repairs.
I have a 2013 Isuzu NQR at work (similar to NPR but more HD) every 4 months it’s in the shop and on average costs $4000. To get her out.
I have several customers with newer diesels having the same problems.
Turbos don’t last due to 6-8ft long catalytic converters and Diesel particulate filter systems. The Injectors are garbage. And Diesel parts are 5-10x more expensive.
The old non-emmission diesels are great but those times are long gone. (2002-2006 depending on engine manufacture)

I’m in the Automotive scrap/recycling industry and I’ve never heard anything bad about the Tundras... besides fuel mileage.

I tuned my Taco. It has helped a lot.

What in the fuck? Was this overweight related? Or just shitting frame that couldn’t handle what the manufacturer said it could?

I have never used a Tundra, I’m certain it’s a great vehicle. I would not personally consider a turbocharged truck unless I didn’t plan to keep it more than 60k miles. I could be wrong but I think the turbo will be an expensive added wear item on the engine. I have had a turbocharged car and like the way they feel. The way they feel is not conducive to me driving economically. Our 3.7l “Cyclone” V-6 towed the 2500 lb trailer from the Carolinas around Colorado’s high county to Moab and back last year and averaged around 13mpg or just over. Worst tank was around 11 and the best tank was close to 16mpg. My wife drives too fast... driving in Wester North Carolina the Van with trailer gets me around 14. The Tacoma is really new still but got 12.5. The Tacoma seems to do better than the van by a couple mpg when not towing. I’m thinking the Atkinson cycle stuff is part of that. The automatic transmission hunts towing with the Tacoma way more than the ford van but both want to rev to produce power. Neither has a problem with normal 6 and 7% grades at under 5000 ft elevation. I’d be fine with the transmission hunting for gears if the fuel economy was good.

If you are thinking of a bigger, non-folding trailer, I would recommend more motor. The V-8 would be a good choice assuming you were like me and didn’t trust the turbo... if I was a kid (which I once was) I’d want the rear seat legroom of the full sized ford. (If the tundra or titan were similar, I’d look at those hard).

One of the considerations is that a full sized, long bed “crew cab” truck like our old F-350s are like 20+ feet long and while stability is great while towing, backing a trailer takes a lot of space. Parking the monster is also an issue. Our trucks were not daily drivers, just trip vehicles.

I had an '03 Ram 3/4 ton 4x4 with the 5.9/6MT and stupidly sold it. :frusty:
It got better mileage than my Tacoma.

That’s what happens when you hit a 3’ whoop at 40mph and get air while towing a 2000lb trailer.

Still have mine along with the Tacoma and I feel sooo much more comfortable in the dodge. Honestly I can say it’s the most favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned. For some reason I just feel so much more relaxed and not the nervousness I feel in the Tacoma. I’d say if you’re going to do it, do it now before your Toyota depreciates any more than it already has. Yes you’re going to loose money but you’ve gotta do what’s best for you and the family with room to expand. Dream truck for me would be a f250 with allison 6 speed and a 5.9 Cummins.

This is embarrassing to admit but I had an 05 that I bought brand new but rarely drove it. After years of a friend from work bugging me to sell it to him I conceded defeat. I sold it to him in 2011 and it was in absolutely perfect condition with a whopping 8500 miles. Yes I know... what an idiot! The funny thing is it’s been 8 years since he bought it and it has a kbb value 5 grand higher than when I sold it to him in 2011.

As outdated as the Tundra is, I say go for it. I couldn’t imagine driving around with a wife and three kids in the Taco. It’s just way too tight for that.

I had an access cab tacoma. My next truck i told myself was gonna get something that can fit everyone comfortably and tow anything. So went to the Ram 2500 5.9 diesel mega cab.

They overloaded the trailer, trailer didnt have brakes, and they were bombing it down a hill at 40mph off-road. So I'd say it was user error. But still, know your towing capacity and when you need trailer brakes.

Yeah, that’s the issue. You can’t have it all. People turn to diesel because they think they’re saving on gas. But total all-in cost is the same, if not, more. Gas V8’s are thirsty, even riding empty, but they pull like a champ and maintenance costs are minimal. Midsize V6 get decent MPG and fit on small trails, but sucks for towing. And takes a toll on you on longer trips, especially with a family.

In my opinion, if you’re towing frequently, full-size V8 is the lesser of the evils.

Id go a half ton with a V8, especially for what you need it for. The MPG will be better and have usable interior room. The Tacoma can tow but doesn't like to. Feels like a 4 cylinder when towing. Don't know about you but towing 1k. street bike and trailer to track approx. 3 hours away, I get 8-10 mpg and the motor screams the whole time at 4k rpm plus for the whole time no matter the settings, ECT etc. And this is on relatively flat ground at about 70mph. My wrangler had less than half the payload of the truck and struggled far less
