When exploring trails in South Dakota, by yourself, in the middle of nowhere, goes horribly wrong!

Oh man, I bet that was an amazing feeling when you found that and it started up!! I think a little bit of risk adds to the excitement, but as you said, you need have the proper tools where you feel you can handle almost anything, and if not, always have an option to be rescued ;). I don't know what it is, but it feels really cool to be in a place where you know there aren't any people within miles and miles....

I went in stupid and blind... like I said, just didn't realize how much I would enjoy it, and even though the terrain was pretty crazy, my silly 2wd was handling it with no problem and it was so much fun.... but once I got stuck, it became apparent what a 4wd could offer ;).

Scary situation, but I never would have realized how much I enjoyed the more extreme trails had I not given this a go... Granted, dumb luck that my stupid valve stem gets knocked, but had I not learned, I may have continued my stupid ways and eventually ended up in a far worse situation..... So, silver lining :).

    1. Upgrade to 4x4
    2. Winch

    This is getting pricey ;).

Not to mention, having an air compressor on-board wouldn't hurt either (just a simple valve replacement and pump-up in this case) ;).

    Like, so many.
If you never get stuck, you're not going hard enough. At least that's what I hear.

Modded it so much it turned into a 4Runner
You can do plenty in 2wd, 4x4 is nice though.

Fuck that! Use what you have. Being over prepared is ghey and just gets in the way of actually getting out there. You made it didn’t ya? Didn’t even have to abandon truck and hike out

Good job. What brand of wheel lock? I've had Dorman's that nearly stripped, was lucky to get them off, the key didn't splinter though. I have McGard on now, but really there's no need for me to even have them, gonna take them off now.

A Roadside Assistance plan could save one the tow charge. Good Sam has a good one, my State Farm policy has roadside assistance built in, both have unlimited mileage to the nearest repair shop. I stopped into my State Farm agents office and asked them a lot about it, specifically "If I'm broke down in the middle of Utah, 60 miles from I70 on a dirt road, will you pay for the tow?" Answer, "Yes." "The nearest repair shop is in Grand Junction or St. George, 250 miles away, will you pay for the tow?" Answer, "Yes."

In your situation, could have been sketchy about how it would be covered. They could have looked at it as 'just a flat tire', in that case I believe they would have limited the coverage.

I read some time ago a guy had wrecked his Tacoma front suspension way out in the boonies, LCA destroyed or something like that, and State Farm had covered the tow.

ARB Bumper, SOS sliders, SOS rear bumper, SOS skid plate. OME Lift. Some other stuff.
There is truth to that. Alot of times we put adventures off waiting until we get all the "right" gear. Meanwhile the clock keeps ticking, life gets in the way, and trips never materialize.

Every time I hear these kinds of discussions about wheel locks I always wonder how many people get their wheels stolen... and how many people have troubles with their locks.

Had a somewhat similar issue occur up in the UP of MI. It was a quad and moto ride and we were out about 75 miles and a guy with a quad crossed a beaver pond. While in the water he must have caught the valve stem on something and when he exited the tire was near flat. The valve stem was not completely ripped off and still hanging by a sliver. I had some quick set J/B weld in my moto tools that we used to adhere the valve stem back to the rim. Surprisingly after it set, we were able to inflate it and it held air until he got back home in MN. Obviously, the PSI required for a quad tire is significantly less than a Taco but we were wondering how we were going to get that quad back to some civilization.

I've since purchased a Garmin In-Reach mini for all my time away from civilization.. sometimes you just can't predict the future..
