Steering bump stop contact

Every day leaving home and in certain elevating or declining driveways turning mostly right I get a metal sounding pop or knock.

Cab mounts are where Toyota first pointed. Blaming loose ones on the Krown spray guys when the vehicle was at 1200kms.

After a few more visits and a new cab mount(old one looked visually fine to me when removed) Toyota now pointing at the suspension bump stops which I assumed contact the LCA. Rubber on metal to me wouldn't make that sound.

I'm now looking at the steering bump stops that limit going beyond full left or right turns. Pardon my lingo.

I greased both areas, then recreated the sound in a parking lot ramp a couple times and saw evidence of contact on the stops.

This happens far too often and is a quite unpleasant sound..

Any alternatives to metal on metal, poly replacements?

Suggestions solutions?

Sounds like you have a bushing somewhere or a balljoint that is bad or going bad. Do you have any kind of lift?

 

Sounds to me like worn LCA bushing. Look it up and you will see many videos with the "clank". Iv got a video of my truck doing to. I'll have to find it

i just watched the video and my truck has been making the SAME noise since i put that 6" lift on it. anyone every figure it out?

 

I ordered some LCA bushings but haven't put them on yet. I'll be getting around to it in the next 2 weeks so I'll let you know when I'm done. I also ordered new inner and outer tie rods, lower ball joints and new uca's. Full front end rebuild

I think i narrowed it down to my sway bar rubbing on the subframe on the front of the truck. This happens with the wheel cut all the way/almost all the way to one side. I took the sway bar off when i was changing my needle bearing in the front differential a while back. There was a spot on the sway bar where there was paint missing with light corrosion from it rubbing. i shimmed the bolts that connect the subframe to the truck with some washers (only on that one side where the sway bar was rubbing).

 

Mine ended up being my lower control arm bushing here popping in and out. I put a few tack welds on them to hold them in. I ain’t had any popping in years.

 

Thanks. Sounds like there are a ton of ways to create this type of noise. First time I've heard of either of these issues. I'm getting mine checked out next week so I'll follow up here.

Following up on this:

I got it looked at and he concluded that it's the steering stops. Due to my lift (2" or so) the steering stops no longer line up so when they contact, they pop past one another. He said it's pretty common, and that the solution would be to carefully grind the stop so that the two sides are flush when they contact, which will be a delicate, iterative process

 

Follow up on the follow up:

I finally just put a camera down there to confirm if it was the steering stops. It's not. It's clearly the LCA mounts. They were woefully under-torqued (maybe 90 ft/lb). Tightened them up and all pops are gone. Pretty embarrassing for the shop that installed the LCAs, under-torqued them, then couldn't diagnose the noise...
