And other people are just doing the math wrong (you). While what you said is true, it’s only telling half the story.

Once upon a time, there existed 2 kinds of people. People who could afford the higher prices of a Toyota pickup, or people who WANTED a Toyota pickup, but couldn’t justify the cost/couldn’t afford it. Everyone knew the Tacoma was a superior vehicle then, as they do now. It’s just that one was way more expensive. But everyone I knew with a ranger wished they had a Tacoma. True story. And that explains SOME of the reason the ford stayed at the top.

The biggest reason is fleet. Every power and utility company, Orkin, pool guy, gardener, cable company, dog catcher had a ford ranger. Nobody was running tacomas in fleets back then.

The tacomas began to overtake the ranger, and ford pulled it before it happened. Get real brah.

Exactly. See “Ford Ranger sales” for further info as well. Dodge midsize? Better offer something much better, at reduced price, which no one is willing to do.
Not a 100% fanboy nut job, but I have owned 5 Tacomas and multiple SUVs as well. I want some stuff fixed, but aint nothing touching Toyota resale anytime soon.
Son just bought a ‘19 Sport as well.

    This is the MF’n gospel.
A footnote to it is that a lot of companies had policies that they only bought American made vehicles fleet vehicles.
The evolution of import vehicles being built in America has flipped that.

The ranger not being available at all (for, reasons) for a few years probably have something to do with it as well.

Ford starved it and killed it to push F150 sales (10k average profit per F150 for Ford), and only brought over the warmed over mediocre international version when they saw GM making a go of it with the Colorado/Canyon twins.

I test drove a Colorado and liked it. But I didn't give a second thought to Ford. I don't like their turbocharged engines and I don't like the way they're doing business.

As far as used Tacomas are concerned; I don't see a future problem in the used market pricing...there will be an increasing demand for used Tacomas for those folks who want to save a few $k from new. Tacomas used price will always be high simply because the demand for new is unbelievable high. Used car dealers offer premiums for used Tacomas and sell them at fair profit...that will remain true in the foreseeable future. If you happen to see a used truck lot with all makes, models you will see very few if any Tacomas simply because they are the #1 seller period!

Coworker, of mine, had to go look at the tacos and rangers as soon as he saw my new taco. His dad own a ford dealership, many years ago, so naturally he is a Ford guy. After he went and looked at the fords he was conflicted/pissed. Said all the new ford rangers are 4 cylinders (super charged). Super charger is just something else to go bad and cost money.

The new Ranger has a Turbo, not a Supercharger.

    ^Thanks for the correction.
Very surprised to see Toyota (Tacoma) having very good/record sales. Everything I have read lately has been painting a dim picture for all vehicle makers. If what I have been reading holds true, I believe that now is a good time to buy and having a well taken care of truck (esp. Tacomas) will be of greater value a few years down the road.
