Working through options on an upcoming move and was wondering...

A Tacoma shouldn't be towed with a dolly because RWD. What if I hooked the truck up to the dolly and then removed the rear drive shaft? Anyone tried it?

And to answer the question before it's asked, yes, I am cheap.

Consult the manual as a start regardless of what anyone suggests here. You can find the authoritative guidance from TOYOTA this way

Rent a flat trailer. There's time to be cheap and time not to be cheap.

Everything I could find said a DCLB wouldn't fit on what's available for rent.

Tread length of a uhaul car carrier is 12' or 144". I found this by googling BTW. Your trucks wheelbase is less than that. Measure.

No much to be found about the specific situation. According to page 561, a tow dolly should be used with a tow truck that is only elevating one set of wheels, though they do recommend a flat bed tow truck be used.

I did. For whatever reason, Uhaul says it won't fit and there's a thread on TW (of course I can't find it now) where an owner of a DCSB said his truck just barely fit. As the long bed has an 13" or so of wheelbase, I figured it was a no go. @hiPSI have you put a DBLB on a UHaul trailer with success in the past?

Doublecab only. Is it a one way rental? What about United rentals tilt bed? I have used those before too. Just a little dicey when you get to the balance point...

Lol! You've got more guts than me! I'd have to bring a change of shorts for the tipping point.
    Yeah, one way rental.

Towed mine on a dolly by removing my rear drive shaft and securing it towards the frame. Tow dollies suck though, anything faster than 45 mph was silly.

Go with a flat bed trailer, no dolly. Not only do they suck, then you have remove the drive shaft and heaven forbid Toyota finds out because they’ll get all warranty police on you.
