I only now one guy from Newport sadly. And not sure on their hiring process. If you wife is in the Navy and has the chance to get transferred to west coast/forward deployed might be worth going Norfolk though. If you get "refereed" to a hiring person at either let me know (via pm) your name and Ill let my buddy know (for Newport) or myself (for Norfolk) . least from Norfolk then quals are a lot more transferable to other federal shipyard.

Qualifications are a hell of a lot weirder than you are used to at the federal shipyards too :)

I CAN NOT speak for Newport News. Only the Federal ones. So Norfolk, Portsmout, Puget, Pearl.

Mind you my experience is with nucs

Pretty much....welders are welders. You dont do fit up. You dont do anything but weld. its a ship so stuff can be confined. You will spend time at a "weld school" to get "qualified" on processes. processes includes things like mixed metals, "seal welds", aluminum, ect. Weld school is a common thing for the federal welders.

You will run your own argon (probably 75/25 too). You will haul machines all over. up 6 flights of straights and down a 50 ft ladder type stuff. You WILL be audited. Either by PT, VT, RT, MT, or.....i dunno? lol.

PAPERWORK. PAPERWORK RULES ALL. Youll do weld rocord cars where shit is measured to the thousandth and then each layer (root, first layer, second, final, ect) is PT/VT'd.

    NUC welders TIG.

I still shiver at the days i spent in a reactor compartment in 110 degree heat, in a tyvek suit, with full face respirator.....for 4+ hours ripping insulation off, bagging it, and dealing with it.

Nuc Insulators (well insulators in general) will always have a place in my heart for the shit they have to deal with

Gotta practice before the real weld.

Im fine backing up...till the dog licks me and blocks the mirror :)

which seriously was an issue our last trip lol. Rusty would sleep in the back till i went to back up....then every time would block the passenger side mirror and would nudge me with his nose. Whitney had to take him outside
