Today I was driving along at about 50 mph when I noticed the temperature guage was really high. I got out and found that the top radiator hose had disconnected. My truck has under 1,500 miles on it (only four weeks old). I reconnected the hose and let it cool off then started it up and the temperature went right down. I got about five minutes down the road and it went up again. Again waited about two minutes restarted and the guage went right back to normal. So I pulled into an AutoZone to get coolant and filled the tank. From Autozone I went to the dealer (where it is now). But on the way the temperature guage went up and down three times! The dealer gave me a loaner car and said they'll look at it tomorrow. Also the last twenty minutes I had no heat which obviously means there's no coolant (or not enough) circulating through the engine.

Any ideas on what the problem is? Being there's so little miles I can't see why it wouldn't be covered under warranty but I can't stop wondering what the problem is.

You filled the tank but did you fill the radiator while the thermostat was open? I don't think just filling the tank would add enough coolant to fill the system if the radiator hose was completely disconnected.

chances are the clamp securing the hose was loose/broke, coolant probably leaked out causing the system to lose pressure so the temp rose to high, causing the hose to eventually fall off. *shrug* thats my guess! let us know what the dealer finds out and how they handle it

maybe a faulty thermostat ... anyhow dont forget to tell the dealer you refilled the radiator with autozone coolant so they can refill with the OEM pinks coolant after they service your truck.

Thanks guys I'll keep everyone updated. That's one thing I just thought about is I just filled up the tank. I didn't want to try opening the radiator cap. Maybe I shoulda brought it home first and let it cool down. I was so close to the dealer I figured I'd just take it. In the meantime I'm driving around in a 2010 Hybrid Highlander. Nice truck. Will let everyone know that outcome.

Just heard back from the dealer. Turns out the hose clamps have two settings on them (never heard of this but ok). One setting is to allow it to be loose enough that you can slide it on and off the radiator. The second setting is to keep it tight to the radiator. Apparently the factory installed the clamp on the loose setting which made it come off. The reason it wasn't working right after I filled it up was because it needed to be bled. I asked and they confirmed that they did drain all the old coolant (including the AutoZone stuff) and replaced it with the Toyota coolant.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

em 2 setting on those OEM hose clamps...I don't think so...i've taken my coolant hoses off so many times I know for a fact its just at full clamp or open...nothing in between...I always use a set of pliers to open them up...

but glad to hear the stealership fixed it...hopefully it didn't ruin anything else...

do you have a SG2? if so you can watch the water temp...

checked my clamps since i have a 2010 also. everything looks ok. the clamps do have a part of it that sticks up that looks like it might hold it open if you open it that far. but not sure. im used to either on or off.

Some spring style hose clamps have tab on them that allows them to "lock" in the open position, which makes removing/installing the hoses easier. I've seen this happen on many brand new vehicles. When the truck was built at the factory, the person responsible for clamping the hoses on missed 1:mad: (out the possibly hundreds they did that day).

Hope no damage was done to the engine when overheated!!!

mines must be the old style clamps since its an '06...

I would do a complete flush of the oil...if your coolant was above boiling point that could make the oil start to gum up and build up residue...just a suggestion...
