I switched from a 2nd to 3rd gen and am very happy with it. Much more polished, a big improvement in comfort and functionality. The power band is different, but I ain’t racing out here in this thing. Give it a try, if you don’t love it, keep what you got. If you do love it, sell your truck private party, and go buy it.

A lot of 2nd gens were built in Texas. Both plants are good.
I'd wait for the 2020 just so you can point out to all the other gens how their interior is out-dated.
Until the Tacoma gets mpg in the upper 20s consistently I see zero reason to buy new.

Back in December 2016 I wanted a truck, my CR-V would not cut it. So wifey says get the same payment, and you get a truck - SOLD!! Thinking I can only afford used, I drove a used 2015 Off-road DCSB MT ~with ~30k on the odometer and I like it. However, being at dealer I then drove brandy new a 2017 Sport DCSB MT. The 3rd gen was night and day over the 2015 in terms of drive ability, features etc... After driving the 2017, I knew I'd be disappointed if I went with 2nd gen. I honestly, I felt the 3rd gen had much more power and get and go (not sure if it does on paper though?) Overall, I shopped, researched, bargained and came home with the 2017 I test drove a few days later 32,4xx OTD. Bring to today, my truck has 41,xxx miles; I enjoy driving it daily, I tow, I haul, and has been a great truck.

    DO IT!!

I traded my 2010 AC SR5 at around 150k miles for a 2018 DCSB TRD Sport. I stuck with the same color, MGM, and put a cap on both, so many folks didn't really notice. But from the driver's seat, there are great changes. I'm happy with my upgrade. Price is very location dependent, and deal dependent. Dealers can fiddle the bottom line with trade value, . . . I am also happy with my dealer, and specifically my salesman from whom I bought both trucks 8 years apart.

Keep your 2nd gen and buy a 3rd gen, you can always sell the 2nd gen.

I had to settle for new when I purchased mine. Most "new" Tocama owners, are people who were originally shopping for a used Tacoma.

I am sota serious. I don't know if you actually know how to drive a stick, but I do know that with the M/T Tacoma if you keep the revs low, around 2000rpm you can get fairly decent fuel economy. But if you keep the revs up, (like driving a 4 cyl), the power and acceleration goes up and fuel economy takes a beating.

From what I can tell, the A/T does not deliver the same kind of driving flexibility as the M/T and as such with the M/T you get a better driving experience.

Drove that car a few weeks ago after my buddy picked up a 1st gen Tundra for his new rig. It was a manual as well and oh so damn fast. I loved it. My buddy was leasing the car, so he let me follow him home with it. I slowed down a few times just to speed my way back up to him.

It was a blast to drive. I miss it some days but I love my 4R more.

Keep the 2nd gen and wait for the 4th Gen. Or buy a Ranger as a place holder....Thats what I did anyway..

Don’t do it. It’s practically the same truck with a worse engine and transmission. The only plus on the 3rd gen is the updated styling and maybe a few tech upgrades.

I just recently sold my ‘15 and bought a ‘19 about 2 weeks ago. For a multitude of reasons. Don’t regret it. Yeah the engine and trans take some getting used to but I am happier now with my ‘19.
