Picked up my first gun today, which I think is a great way to celebrate Independence Day. Just a Ruger 10/22 as I wanted something I could afford to shoot a bunch.

So what do I need to know about storage and transport? It came with a padlock but I can’t seem to get it to fit, so I was going to take some 1/8” stainless cable and crimp some loops on it to use with the lock. But I’m guessing the lock has to be DOJ approved...

No, just a regular padlock (says Ruger on it though, lol) with a long shackle

It’s been a few years since my last firearm but the law then was that you must buy or must come with a trigger lock. The exception is if you have a gun safe you have to provide mfg and model number to ffl and they document that on paper work. As far as transport, and this rule may more apply to handgun, firearm must be in a locked case and unloaded. Ammo needs to be somewhere separate from gun- like in trunk of a car. Now with all the new ammo bullshit laws I don’t even know what to tell you but since you’re now in some 5 year window of a purchase but as much as you can. I started hoarding ammo years ago and I have enough for the zombie apocalypse.
Don’t discount a 10/22 as this is the most economical and versatile gun to own. It checks all the boxes

    You didn’t read the regulations?

Run a cable lock thru the magazine port and put it in a rifle bag and you’re good to go to/from the range. At home my stuff is locked up in a gun safe.

Don’t overthink it. It isn’t much different from what common sense would have you do. Same applies to most other states.

Nice approach. Better than just jumping to conclusions and pure speculation from most “other state” residents. Honestly. ALL states have a few retarded laws in their arsenal. Sure in CA. Few of our are gun related. Despite that, we do Field the brunt of the comments

Right, but my question about the lock is: can I make my own cable lock? Sure - I can just buy one but I'm leaving tomorrow or sunday for a road trip and Im trying to save time.

Common sense and California legislation is pretty much the epitome of an oxymoron!

If you want to subsidize the cost of something bigger, let me know. I picked up a couple thousand rounds of .22lr for under 5 cents each. When I can reliably hit my mark I'll upgrade.

If you are genuinely concerned with firearm regulations in your area, you would benefit from calling or visiting your county sheriff's office. Those folks will tell you exactly what you need to know.

Should’ve done it years ago when 22lr ammo was less than $.01/round.

I suppose I should. This county's sheriff does suck though.

The best thing you can do is either call your Sheriffs Department or just go in and get the documentation directly from the horses mouth.

Take in a box of donuts at shift change, shake some hands, thank them for the service they provide.
Goes a loooonnngggg way for a group that does many thankless hours.

Nice choice on the 10/22. I lost mine in a boating accident.

The sheriff sucks, or the sheriff's department sucks? Very unlikely you would speak with the sheriff directly.

Well, the deputies at the airport are usually shit heads. And Ahern is kind of a commie, but point taken. I'll give them a call.
