Very true. I used to carry a copy of the penal code with my guns. Always in the trunk with all my ammo, loaded mags etc. If LEO is having a bad day and they want to get you all you have to do is have a gun. But I'm my experience that hasn't been the case.

It could be... All I know now is that firearm cannot be in a ready-to-fire state to constitute a "loaded firearm", although you can get a citation for having an unloaded firearm in public.

There's nothing about having loaded mags and or ammo in the same compartment or case.

I've heard too many stories to test my luck with a LEO regarding firearms. I try to be as safe and respectful as possible, but its getting more and more difficult to be a firearm hobbyist. I'm thinking of just sticking to bolt guns, lever guns, and revolvers for my working collection and keeping the 'scary, modern' ones just as art in the safe.

California Penal Code 16840(b)(1) -- As used in Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 25100) of Division 4 of Title 4, in subparagraph (A) of paragraph (6) of subdivision (c) of Section 25400, and in Sections 25850 to 26055, inclusive, (1) A firearm shall be deemed to be "loaded" when there is an unexpended cartridge or shell, consisting of a case that holds a charge of powder and a bullet or shot, in, or attached in any manner to, the firearm, including, but not limited to, in the firing chamber, magazine, or clip thereof attached to the firearm.

See also People v. Clark (1996) 45 Cal. App. 4th 1147 (“[T]he Legislature's use of the phrase "attached in any manner" to the firearm was intended to encompass a situation where a shell or cartridge might be attached to a firearm or "loaded" for firing by some unconventional method. The phrase does not demonstrate a clear Legislative intent to deem a firearm loaded no matter how a shell is attached to a firearm; in particular, it does not indicate a clear intent to deem a gun "loaded" when the ammunition, as here, is in a storage compartment which is not equivalent to either a magazine or clip and from which the ammunition cannot be fired.”).

Conflicting info here, but as always, play it safe and keep ammo, mags, and firearms separate.

That's sad. I miss CA in some ways, well just the outdoors, but dang do I love our gun laws here! I type this about to go out with a S&W bodyguard in my pocket.

Guess I was given wrong information by someone who seems very confident that it’s a law. Either way, don’t have a trunk anyway or a cover so it all goes in the back seat. Doesn’t hurt to be extra cautious though. We are in California after all

I 2nd this. My cousin is Leo and the general consensus is the gun laws are total bs and they choose not to enforce them. And as stated. These dang laws are so complicated along with all the other laws, compounded with local ordinances, it’s hard for them to keep up. The main this is don’t do anything stupid that makes yourself stand out. Sadly I don’t want to do that either so I basically quit shooting my ar’s because they were build legally at the time and now they don’t conform nor am I willing to reclassify them. They basically will go to Nevada with me when I visit family, taken apart, and I’ll shoot them when I’m visiting there

Unless a Ruger .22 is now classified as an “assault rifle” in CA then it must be locked

You put a thumb hole stock or pistol grip on it and it would be classified as one.

I wouldn’t overspend on a fire proof safe for guns or documents.

Our fires in 2017 basically taught me that if a safe survives a fire (in our case, a wildfire), the contents may not. Most people at the locksmith opened the door to ash from documents that incinerated inside the safe, and precious jewelry had melted inside as well. Guns didn’t fair any better.

Not sure how safes are fire rated, if it’s the safe itself or if it’s supposed to be in protection to the interior, but heat is heat, and even safes that were several thousand dollars didn’t protect goods inside. Just a FWIW.

It’s more to make it harder to steal and to keep rounds from blowing all over.

Sorry to hear about the fire.

You can make your own lock. Gun cable locks have a protective coating so you don’t mar the gun.
