Was going to go that route with the wife's daily but they are diligent with visual inspections here. Ended up replacing the exhaust manifold cat with a bolt on Magnaflow (CA Compliant of course). Everything was good, about to take it in for smog to renew registration and what do I find, damn coolant leak. Radiator was leaking. Replaced radiator and decided to do a trans drain/fill. Next thing I know, oil change, plugs/coils/wires, air and cabin filters... hell, nearly everything done in the routine maint department. Smog/registration done. Now I have an intermittent hard start with rough idle when cold. :facepalm:wtf.

As long as there's no codes and it passes visual you'll be good. Fuck I have to get the star test done this year.

the cat would throw a code. cleared, drove it until the drive cycles were green then it would throw a check engine again nearly immediately. So a new cat was required if I wanted to keep that little gas saver going. Yep, it was a star test as well.

Yeah that's what I went through before my last smog test a couple years ago. Had to get 2 new cats installed (Carb Magnaflows).

Leaky fuel injector is more likely

well, im at a loss. Only other thing I can think of that is left is timing belt. Last done at 90k and its at 172k now. It's weird - when cold, go to start and the starter cranks and sometimes it takes a good 2 or 3 secs before it fires up. When it does start, idle is wonky. Once warm, all is fine. Shut it off, starts right back up. I've tried turning the ignition from lock to on back to lock back to on several times before trying to start it when cold. Same behavior so guess not the pump.

I would think if it was a leaky injector itd be the other way around, hard start when warm and easy when cold

News is going crazy here in SoCal following the earthquake yesterday, saying the big one is closer now lol. Does make me feel like I should go fill up my Jerry cans just to be safe.

The fuel pump doesn’t prime with key on that’s for all toyotas. That’s why the typically start slower
