Hi, new to the forums, just purchased my 2010 Tacoma last week. And I love it. But back to the topic. Any surfers or watermen out there? Im curious as to what you guys do with your keys while out on the water? Is it possible for me to get a spare key cut just for the doors and just lock my keys and remote in the car, and keep the spare in my board shorts? Or will the truck not lock with they keys still inside. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have no idea, but my 2010 came with a little crappy key that was just for the doors and ignition..i think it's called a valet key

edit: no key fob, just one key thing

Yeah, the grey key is a valet key. The good thing about it is it cannot be cloned to make a copy of the chip inside if you lose it.

use your valet key (the one thats grey out of the 3 keys)
either tie it in your pocket or hide it with the hide-a-key.

Definitely dont leave any key/clicker in your truck, if someone breaks in they can find your key and drive right away. if they take your clicker they can get in your truck if they see you again or get your address from your paperwork.

I know it has a chip in the key and they say not to take it in the water, but I've never had a problem with taking mine in the water. I have also seen people get those lock boxes for keys and attach them to their truck.

I usually take my key with me. I've never had any problems with the key even when it's been in the water all day.

i take my key when i go bodyboarding, but a lot of people use those master locks compartment things that you can hang underneath your truck, i think theyre made to go around a doorknob but its like a little safe with a combo lock on it.

I have accidently taken the fob from my Tundra into the water once just forgot I had it in my pocket. Damn thing still worked fine I wouldn't suggest you do it on purpose but very well made just the same.

Go to home depot or the like and have a flat (unchipped) key cut. I keep one in my wallet. The auto-door locks won't work with a key in the ignition. but you can hide your chipped key and lock the doors with the flat key. Sometimes when I need to charge my phone while I'm on a secure jobsite, I'll leave my chipped key in the switch and use my flat key to lock the doors.

That's one thing Ford has really got going for them...

that key pad thing on the drivers door. I had a Ford F-150 and that was my favorite option.

Unfortunately (of fortunately for Ford) they have a use patent on it so I don't think we'll see other manufactures with it any time soon.

I also read somewhere where GM 1st tried to buy in to the patent...then when unsuccessful, they took Ford to court over the deal. And finally, GM took it to congress stating Ford should share the patent on "safety grounds"...again without success.

So, Ford owns this one. For how long I don't know. But it is cool and is perfect for surfers and boaters.

I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.
I put a cabinet lock on my small cubby in my bed. Then I just clip one little key to me and lock my keys in that cubby. works great. You could put in a combo lock instead of a keyed lock too if you want.

It's called a contractor box and if you got one, you can secure it hidden inside the truck and leave your beeper and chipped key inside it, then have a flat chip less key to open the doors that can go into the water, I heard those chipped keys are expensive to replace and reprogram so I don't take any chances of getting wet my chipped key.

Keep the master key safe at home and only use the valet key for daily use, it does the same as the master key and cannot be copied if lost or stolen and only use the master key to make new ones or if you lost the valet key.
How many times, on a daily basis, you need to make copies of your chipped keys?
Probably never if you never loose your keys, so no use on carrying the master key around all day every day risking loosing it or getting it stolen.

PS, if you loose all your master keys and the small plate with the code that came with the keys, you'll need to reprogram the whole system with new codes and keys, don't even ask how much it would cost to do that.
