Anyone have an opinion on the Chevy 2500HD Custom with the 6.6 gas?

I am a member of a Raptor forum as well. 3.5 EB engines are having problems with cam phasers failing on 2017-2019 Raptors. It’s a $4-5k repair if your truck is out of warranty. Ford also used a plastic oil pan and drain plug through mid 2018. You can guess what a disaster that was. Site also mentions lots of shifting issues with new 10-speed tranny. Lemon law buy backs are a common occurrence as well. I will take a small block naturally aspirated engine any day of the week over the complex twin turbo design Eco Junk.

Other than sucking gas, I don’t think you can go wrong with any 3/4 ton gas engine. I’m pretty sure all of the trucks are rock solid. Diesel is where the fanboys come out.

Yeah, the 6.4 HEMI in the Power Wagon is a beast.

I had that motor in my Dodge Challenger. It could power the entire eastern seaboard for a week!

And I still got 23 MPG on the freeway.

I think TRDPROONE is correct in his comments with the F150. I also saw several rear end related issues and stupid stuff like swelling lug nuts that wont fit your lug wrench after a few years. I have always been a fan of F150s but wont touch any of them made since 1997. Its the same with Chevrolet and I wont waste my time with Dodge / Ram /Jeep products. Stick with Toyota.

One thing to note about your V8 recommendation is the 5.0 Coyote V8 just went through a redesign that corked it's reliability. All of the Lemon Law buybacks I've been reading about are for the V8. Just a reminder about ANYTHING turbo'd... change your oil and use high quality synthetics. I'm willing to bet the people having cam phaser issues waited the recommended 10,000 mile interval before changing their oil. Now this isn't an oil change interval argument, but the cleaner the oil the better with turbos and cam phasers (personal experience from using an extended interval on a 2005 Legacy GT and causing a AVCS code).

They may help somewhat but poor engineering from a reliability standpoint is the major cause.

I'll be experiencing this first hand with my 3.5EB. I'll keep you all updated if I have any issues. Currently at almost 7,000 miles. The truck shifts great, sounds great, and moves faster than I really need it to, but who doesn't love turbo pulls :burnrubber::cheers:

^^This. I had a 2011 F250 with the 6.7 in it. Same motor they used in the raptor. Hands down one of the best trucks I ever owned. Motor pulled like an animal got 15-16 while towing an was smooth. I preferred it over my 5.9 Cummins. I know that might be sacrilege but the simplicity and lower maintenance cost of the gas motor were worth it.

This is a Tacoma website. Why is everyone wanting to compare other trucks to what we have now?
Ive had other trucks and that is why I have a Tacoma now. If you like Tacoma's or Tundras there really isn't anything else that compares. I have no plans to buy another make.
I will say The Honda Ridgeline is interesting but it is a SUV wanting to be a truck.

You Sir, have pinpointed EXACTLY what I did... my only homework was regarding resale value (which is of course better than anything else), but I failed to take into account just how loud, slow, and inefficient the Tacoma is.

I'm generally more than happy to go the most financially responsible route, but there is more to life than money (I can't believe I'm saying that!).

I've actually got my eye on the 2020 Police Interceptor Explorer... a 400hp twin turbo 3.0, and RWD/AWD ought to make for an effortless commute...

How loud the Tacoma is? Are we driving the same truck?

Because sometimes shit happens. I've had a Tacoma for over 15 years now and a little Nissan truck for about 5 years before that, and they served me well. Now I'm thinking about getting a 5k pound travel trailer and would want something more comfortable and powerful to pull it.

I was hoping that going through this thread might provide some help in deciding my best option for a full size truck if I go that route. After reading all this, I'm leaning toward waiting to see what Toyota does with the Tundra next year, because I wouldn't buy the current model.

Congratulations on the new truck and you won't be lacking in the power department. Don't take this the wrong way but buy the extended warranty if you plan to keep it for a while.

It’s too bad the next generation Tundra is not out yet. The current Tundra is outdated and getting long in the tooth. For Tacoma buyers to move up they have no choice but to look at the Tundra competition.

I only leased it. Like the Tacoma I didn't want to be stuck in it if I didn't like it. I usually get the extended warranty on anything I buy. My Honda, my Toyotas and any other brand I might buy. They all have their issues and with all the electronics in the damn things today you just never know.

Pretty sure the money I've saved declining extended warranties, I could pay cash for a new vehicle. But I get it.
