Drive a few different makes and see what you like. All the big 3 half tons are excellent. It’s only the fanboys who think reliability and resale value are exclusive to Toyota products. If I needed a half ton in 2007 or even 2012, I probably would have picked the Tundra. Now the other makes are a lot more competitive.

I haven't checked the Chevy forums but the Ford F150 forum scared me lol. I thought TW was bad till I saw the Ford forum.

Extended warranty is like insurance. Only worth it if you use it. You are lucky to not have needed it. But if someone used it they would think it's well worth it. I like the piece of mind myself. They are extremely negotiable so you should be able to get a pretty decent deal on one.

I agree entirely. Extended warranties is insurance and insurance companies are raking it in.

The extended warranty that I was offered in Canada was 7 years for $3500Cdn. which in reality extends the bumper to bumper for only 4 years and power train for 2 years.

The sales pitch from the document guy pointed out that the big expensive part was the $6000 head unit and that he has the extended warranty and gets benefits like free oil changes (only for 3 years I think) and other stuff every year. Meanwhile, I am thinking that a $3500 insurance premium is way too expensive so I am not really paying close attention because I know that I am not a buyer.

My buddy, a former car salesman, warned me to steer clear of paint and under body and rust protection, and extended warranty as they are huge profit generators for the dealership.

The forum complainers could scare you away from any make. The big 3 are making more full size trucks in a month than Toyota makes in a year and the millions of people having no problems don't announce it on the internet. That said, I bought an ecoboost F150 just because I enjoyed driving it the most and I'm not too concerned about long term reliability. I probably won't keep it past 100,000 miles because I don't have to. I still have my best-gen Taco and I'm no longer 19 years old with $71.00 in my checking account trying to squeeze every last penny out of a 280,000 mile hoopty.

Yes 3500 is a bit steep. Should have been able to negotiate that Almost in half though. Atleast here in the states ya can. Like I said. If you needed it during ownership you would think it was well wort the money. If you never used it then it was a waste. It's a crap shoot really.

I'm sure you're probably right about the forums. But while getting a lemon wouldn't financially ruin me, who needs the hassle? I wish I knew more people personally that owned a full size. I only have one good friend who bought a Chevy 2500 to pull his TT and he's had pretty good luck with it.

Well, joining the ranks. Trading in my Tacoma for a new Ram 2500. Cummings diesel with MT, last of the breed. It's been fun here. Got $26K for trade, a little less than hoped for but higher than KBB.

Most people don’t use them, don’t need to use them, crash the vehicle or sell it so it’s never used.

Also, there’s so many “warranty” items that the dealer could deny especially on a truck.

As for buying a used vehicle at 60k miles, the extended warranty works. I used the warranty once for a blown engine on a used Subaru Outback.

I'm in a blue-collar trade in Utah, everyone I know drives a full size pickup whether they need it or not. They're so common that everyone knows someone who had a brand X that was a piece of shit, but they also know a dozen people who really like that same brand X. My dad's had good luck with GM pickups, my brother prefers Dodge and I've had 2 company F150s that were great. When I got rear-ended in my company truck, I had a rental 6.2L Silverado for 6 weeks and I liked that truck a lot, too. Old Toyota 4X4's will always be my jam, but I have no loyalty when it comes to new vehicles. Drive what you like and if it sucks, sell it before the warranty expires.

Been watching the 2500 for awhile now and when they eliminated the MT in 2019, there are fewer and fewer 2018's available. Driving 500+ miles to pick mine up but figured if I wait any longer they will be all gone. Sure nice to have a transfer case stick on the floor again instead of that knob on the dash which one can easily mistake as a fan switch.

Then when you want 4 wheel drive, you get it RIGHT NOW. The electronic transfer case drove me nuts on my former 2nd gen Tacoma. Turn the dial and take a nap while it decides what to do.

Mine shifts faster than my old J-shift. No issues with the dial for me.
