brake pads: what comes from the factory

    I have searched and cannot get a definite answer, I suspect metallic because of the dust buildup within 1500 miles. I ordered some ceramic pads but does anyone know which type comes from the factory?

    Also drivetrain fluids and motor oil, is it conventional or synthetic?

    still can't find the material of factory brake pads but like I said, I think they're metallic

    The motor oil is definitely synthetic but can't find info about transcase & manual transmission or front & rear differential

    OEM brake pads last around 70K on average. You won't get better performance from aftermarket.

    2nd gen were ceramic I think...I assumed the same for 3rd gen?

    I only got about 60K out of mine originally. Considering how much weight and stopping demand is required out of those pads, especially in my own case where I wheeled mostly within the first 70K of the trucks life that is still highly impressive by all accounts.

    Very likely semi-metallic. The stock pads dust a lot, easily just as much as the stock pads on my IS350 when it was new which drove me nuts. I replaced the Lexus pads with Akebono Proact ceramic pads and the dust went down to almost nothing so I'm likely going to get the same for Taco. They seem to stop just as well to me and made in USA:oldglory:.

    Ceramic is the dusty kind, you see the dust on German cars because of this.

    Metallic is the shit cheap aftermarket pads that make a racket but last forever.

    Semi-metallic is Toyota OEM almost across all models, including Lexus.

    The dust is because you need a car wash, not because of the pad material.

    You're right, semi-metallic compounds that are softer cause brake dust.

    I've yet to see a Toyota with heavy brake dust on the rims though, usually neglect. I had to scrub my wifes cars rims today because she never washes her rav4. But nothing like a BMW rim.

    That's what I noticed as well

    I would think in this day and age all new vehicles were ceramic, metallic brakes do have better stopping for now but that isn't an issue for me. I rather have low dust personally. My Mustang and Soul have ceramic and hardly any dust after 1000 miles. I ordered a set of ceramic for the Taco, they will be here tomorrow.
