gives me hope if, while traveling on these flooded Iowa freeways, if i lose control and dive head first into the 'swamp' the rescue team will eventually show up to winch me out :)

Btw my original post should have said "pop" not "loud bang". It was more like a pop that I heard. I think in the stress of the moment I didn't write accurately.

Don't feel bad young man,,,,, I opened my hood, checked my oil,, needed some, so I pulled the filler cap, put a quart in and closed the hood, next day me and the wife went to church about 15 miles away, pulled in the parking lot and the truck was smoking furiously from under the hood. No smoke at all driving, looked like it was on fire when I stopped though.

Popped the hood and I was covered in oil along with the motor.. Left the filler cap off, still sitting on the valve cover:frusty:. That sucker dripped oil for a month, no telling what would have happened on a lengthy drive. Only lost about 3/4 qt. but it looked like 3/4 case.

In my 59 yrs of turning wrenches I've never done anything like that, yes I did to, didn't put the lug nuts on tight on my old 55 chevy street rod back in 1966.

This time I have an excuse, I'm 71 yrs old with a slooooooow memory.

Very happy it worked out for you and you are safe!

The way everyone here was ready to help the OP the best they could almost brought a tear to my eye to be honest.

We should create a Rescue sub with regions! Or perhaps create a thread with members we should contact in their respective areas if you need help. Essentially like a Tacomaworld volunteer fire department but roadside or mechanic help =P Just an idea.

Just throwing this out there but if anyone is ever in the Atlanta or North GA area and are down and may need help feel free to reach out to me as well. I am a mechanic with a garage that has all FSMs and about as much tooling and equipment as a full shop minus a lift. I do engine rebuilds, trans rebuilds, engine swaps, repairs, diagnosis, welding, etc.... it's not my full time job but I do it on the side to work on my own stuff, friends, family, and odd jobs someone may ask me about. I do have an 8-5 job M-F.

Good thing it was nothing serious, I've had stuff come loose too so dont feel bad. It should've had some remnants of oil left to keep the bearings lubed but I would check for any weird noise when you get home. If you're stopped at a rest area take some time to check on fluids BEFORE you go, not when you just stopped, so that all fluids would be down in the pan when you check. Have extra quart just in case.

I think he has. Texted me earlier that he was “off the grid” and will follow up with me later about some other things.

A final post to round out this adventure...here's some pics of the trip and truck in Wyoming, Glacier, Montana, SD and finally Wisconsin. 5,000 miles in all without any further problem. The camper comes in at about 3,900lbs packed. Planning a Nashville > west coast trip next summer. I would like to put a super charger on it before that trip (anyone got one?).

    Coffees are shipping this week.
