Yeah......if your truck wasn’t developed by Toyota for off road racing, stay the heck outta here. An SR5 is not a TRD and shares nothing in common with it. Also the TRD Sport is tuned specifically for street racing, like high-speed drifting and urban assault, and shit, so has nothing in common with the pure bred off road TRD racers we drive.

Have you guys tried going downhill? This was on the return trip from Granby Colorado last week- SR5 3.5 acess cab, in sixth, mid grade, camper shell with roof rack, just over 10,000 miles, 265/75/16 KO2s and doing 68-75mp on I-70.

The trip UP there wasn't so great, I was reading about 15 mpg...

I am barely breaking mine in. Only 700 miles on it. I have been babying the pedal on it for all its miles so far. Getting 16 to 17 city and 21 to 22 highway at 65 mph.

    Stop being an idiot.

Differences are there and they do affect your mpg.

I guess the manual was written for idiots, because, like me, Toyota knows the mpgs are the same between all common trims.

2016 TRDOR ACLB. I got up to 24 mpg once when stock driving from NC to Philly via I-81. I normally got 20 +/- when stock.
at 38k miles she got new Falken wildpeaks 265/75/16 and a century camper shell, mid rise top with yakima bars. both things took about 1/1.5 mpg off.
I just drove from Asheville to Snowshoe WV (mountains the entire way with the bed loaded up heavy) and averaged 19.7 there and 18.4 back.
I don't drive like a granny. I accelerate with confidence but I dont drive much over 70mph either and when I do thats when I see the mpg drop the hardest.

i have no idea how some of y'all get such shitty mpg. My coworker has a 4runner with a massive overland rack with heavy shit and an RTT, 3" lift and 33" MT tires and he gets 16 mpg on the highway

I'm with you... and I don't even drive as gingerly as you sound like you do. I also live in the mountains... not as high altitude as you guys but it is steep here because the land folds fast in appalachia. I occasionally check with math and don't rely on the computer for the last tank before a service and the first after too. I *TRY* to use non-ethanol gas but where I get it isn't on any of my normal routes so I don't always.

I kinda do get it either. I've never used non-ethanol gas, usually 85 or 87 octane. I'm finding with the 87 there's a little less shift-hunting when I'm climbing hills. I used to live in KY and those eastern hills in WVa can be steep. Maybe Toyota put a little secret ingredient in the 2016 Access Cab ORs...

My ‘18 TRDOR has ~6700 miles, most of which are highway. At right around 3800 miles, I started using 93 octane Shell V+. As far as mileage goes, I saw similar percentage increase in mileage vs cost between 87 & 93 octane. Recently, I started using Shell 87 octane again because my driving needs changed (mostly around town), and noticed no difference in mileage. I’m averaging 21-22 mpg.

I’m thinking I switched to high octane at right around the same time the “break-in” was finishing, which caused me to think spending 25%-30% more in fuel was helpful.

So this weekend I made a conscious effort to better my fuel economy. I had to prove it out for myself. Truck is a trd or double cab short bed - auto and has 255/80/17 st maxx tires, no lift.
Here are my results (mix highway and street - Kansas City). Results are all based on the display with no correction (tires). 87 octane fuel from Quick Trip gas station.

    12.6 mile commute - 21 mpg
    16.5 mile commute - 21.6 mpg
    6.2 mile commute - 23 mpg

To achieve these numbers, I had to break away from my typical driving habits and drive - in my opinion - very slow. I coasted as much as I could and tried to keep my rpms down (2k or lower), which made me lose speed/dip below speed limit at times (mainly going uphill). The only time I gave it any significant gas was on on-ramps to get up to speed prior to merging in. I never went above 70 mph on the highway unless I was going downhill. I would say my avg highway speed was 65ish. My average prior to this was 16.5 - 17 mpg with new wheels and tires and 19 mpg on stock tires. The vehicle display currently reads 18.6 mpg avg with 100 miles till empty.

My conclusion is that the truck is capable of 20+ mpg, if you are ok with driving like a senior citizen. The results surprised me a little, especially with the heavy tires. Not sure if I can do this day in and day out, but I'm going to try this for a bit longer. At the very least, I;d like to try this on an entire tank and manually calculate the mpg....I suppose I will need to factor in the difference due to tire size as well.

Anyways, I wanted to share my results here.

I think some of the things in my favor: 1. Even though I live at 7,500 ft elevation I don't have any really steep roads that I drive daily. I do the higher elevation passes every other week or so. 2. Very little stop-n-go driving. When I'm in Steamboat, once the light goes green, the cars in the adjacent lane take off and leave me in the dust, only to be next to them at the next light. 3. Mostly secondary roads at 40-60 mph. 4. When I hit the freeway (I-70 or I-80) it's in rural areas so the traffic density is lower so I can do 65mph without being a traffic hazard. I very rarely go to Denver, it's pretty zooey driving down there. Last winter I did a ski trip to SLC and with the steep canyons to the ski areas and driving around SLC (very fast, zooey drivers there too) I did notice a 2-3 mpg drop.

Dude that’s good mpg. I have a 19 tundra on 60lb 275/70/18 tires and average 11.8. But it’s a huge truck with a sweet engine.

My MPG's didn't go up until I hit 20k, coincidentally that's when I started to do my own maintenance because I got sick of it taking hours for a tire rotation and oil change.
