When I plug in my home address in the truck's gps, it says my distance from work to home is 15 miles. But when I get home and look at the "distance travelled" it says I drove 23.4 miles.

    So what is the deal?

The initial distance calculation is probably showing you straight line distance as opposed to actual travelled distance.

did you drive the same route shown on the GPS? Have you compared the truck GPS to another GPS?

Almost every GPS I've used in the past have done this.

It's a feature Toyota put in the 3rd gens so that the warranty runs out sooner.

That would be the first GPS to do that, as every other GPS I am aware of shows "Distance by route chosen, along with travel time per route".

It would have to be smaller tires to show you going further than you actually traveled. In this case it's about 50% difference so he'd have to have 20" tall tires for it to be that far off.

Both GPS apps on my phone do it, Waze and Apple Maps, first prediction is straight line. Once I start navigating, it then shows the actual travelled distance.

That's like a 50% delta between 15 and 23. Unless you are running 47s, you aren't gonna see a swing bigger than like 7% for most of the tire combos we run..

This. Google gives you straight distances until you pick a route.

I live 23 linear miles from Park City. The minimum road distance is 34 miles.

There you go. Since GPS is satellite based, it gives a flat ground distance. If you are going up and down hills that will add mileage. Also, the GPS does not know what lane you are in when going around curves. Just as on a track on my motorcycle, If I do a lap all on the inside it is a shorter distance than if I did a lap all on the outside.
