Any woodworkers?

Not sure, wife swears it smells like my cigar humidor which would infer cedar. Whatever it is it soaked up stain like a sponge and looks beautiful. Wish I had thought to take a before pic, it was pretty raggedy.

 

..that definitely doesn't look like cedar... is it dense/heavy, ...hardwood?... looks like mahagony or sapele w/ a dark stain applied...

 

It’s heavy as Hell, but I attribute that to the enormous pane of glass. Going by the knuckle test, it sure feels very dense.

 

yep, ...i'll bet that's a real nice solid door, ...looks good w/ the mitered molding framing the glass...

 

Yeah, quite a PITA to sand around all the bevels in the molding, but I feel like you do it right or don’t do it at all.

 

...yep, ..depends how bad the finish is... did it have a film finish on it (poly, varnish, ..)?

 

Honestly, the inside of the door looks and feels like it had/has a urethane finish remaining. Outside felt almost like bare wood, and was ashy grey in color. Was pretty shocked how it came out after it looked that bad to start.

 

...maybe it was installed in a location w/ a southern exposure, ...the sun (UV light) will degrade film finishes over time...

 

Finally done. Wife didn’t want to stain the inside so we laid three coats of Urethane over the natural color on the inside. Was a bear to get it hung, striker plates and hinges were all at different heights. But, $300 into the project including the second hand door, and it certainly looks nice.

 

So I need a table saw with dado capability. Any recommendations?

I have a fuckload of projects in my near future for the house and this is going to be one of the most used tools for a lot of them. A lot of it is going to be custom to fit the space so I couldn't just buy stuff if I wanted to.

 

how much space and money you got?? I personally have a Jet, but shop fox is also decent brand...lots depends on what your budget is.

 

I personally love my SawStop. I know some people on here are really against the safety technology, but it does give a certain peace of mind. Costs a bit more than other saws, of course, then you also have to buy the dado brake cartridge and a compatible dado set, but I personally think it's totally worth it. I was just running the dado yesterday for almost 3 hours.

 

I have the entire upstairs of 3 car garage for space. Has receps in the floor and everything.

Money is another question, I don't need a top of the line saw right away. I just need something capable that'll get me through to the point where I decide if I want to go industrial.

Not really in the market. I know the technology and like it however.

We use BladeStop bandsaws at work, which are similar but.. an entirely different market. As a demonstration the guy ran a rubber glove into the saw as fast as he could, and then blew the glove up afterwards.

(They detect on both conductivity such as the sawstop and via a camera which detects specific colors.

 

prob looking at around $1K...for a nice jet, grizzly or shopfox. May check out your local craigslist...but Id stick with something decent. Dewalt is also good...

 

Appreciate the recommendations. Might be less painful for me to pick up a portable table saw and get a router for cutting the dadoes instead of doing it on the tablesaw.

There's so many mills around here I'd like to be able to buy rough lumber but ain't got the dollarydoos for that atm.

Its a 16" Delta / Milwaukee Multiplex 50-A radial arm saw I inherited from my granddad .

Looking at the details of it , serial # and Red Star Products badging (Red Star was purchased by Rockwell / Delta in 1948) , plus some digging on old tools sites , I'm fairly confident it is a 1948 saw





It was originally and is currently trailer mounted , I plan on losing the trailer and putting it in the shop as a bench mounted fixed unit

I've let this tool get pretty badly neglected but managed to get the slides and all the knobs and adjustments freed up yesterday , have yet to test the motor but the arbour spins freely by hand
