I recently started thinking about selling my truck. I love my truck but just have the itch for something new/different. Originally thought about going to a 3rd gen, but after reading about some issues, I ruled that out and I like the 4.0.

So, now I’m considering purchasing a 2019 4Runner TRD off road. I test drove one on Saturday and really liked it. I’d be happy in a SR5 4x4 or SR5 premium, but it just happens I can get a better deal on the TRD off road. I’m still a little concerned about losing the bed, but the cargo area with seats down and back window down seems capable of moving every I need and a utility trailer isn’t that expensive if I need one later down the road.

Anyone here, make the move from Taco to 4Runner?

I went from a 2nd gen Tacoma to a 4runner pro. Test drove a 3rd gen Tacoma, no thanks with that engine and transmission. The 4Runner is a much better built vehicle than the 3rd gen Tacoma. If you don't need a bed it's a better choice. Good luck.

2010 4Runner SR5 4x4 with just a bit over 150K on it. Aside from regular maintenance, it has been solid. I suggest changing the suspension. The coils are way too soft and will nose dive and have body roll. 275/70R17 fits without a lift and zero rubbing issues but those tires only come in E load.

I’ve never owned a true 4x4, I don’t really need it in middle Georgia.. and even when we would go to the mountains and ride I never had to use the e locker.. but I like the TRD OR wheels, hood scoop and interior better and as I said earlier, the TRD OR was cheaper than a SR5 premium and SR5 4x4.. and I think resale value would be better on the TRD OR vs going down to SR5 2wd, even though I’m pretty sure the 2wd SR5 is more than capable for my needs.

I always advice to get the 4x4 if you can swing it. Our 4Runner's 4x4 hardly gets used but was thankful to have it in some of our trips.

Thanks! Yeah, we are planning a road trip out to Colorado in September, and I could see it coming in handy as we explore the state and parks.

If you are able to go to the neighboring state of Utah, it's well worth the visit for their national parks.

I've been thinking the same. A V8 SUV + small trailer would be my plan. I don't haul stuff in my bed as much as I had anticipated, so an SUV with a closed back cargo area would be great, plus a potentially better ride due to rear springs.

Plus with a trailer you can haul a lot more in a given shot because you're not dealing with GVWR limitations of the Tacoma's bed.

Can beat a 4runner. I would be driving one if I didnt buy the Taco. I would miss my bed too much though.

My wife drove a 4x4 SR5 Premium 4Runner for about a year, but recently traded it in. It was nice, roomy, and lots of cargo space. Drove it on several trips, including NY and back. I would have definitely been happy driving that as my daily driver.

I know you say you are getting $2000 extra selling yourself, but you might want to look at that vs. the TAVT savings you might get on trading it in, if you haven't already.

I recently purchased a 2019 Taco over the 4Runner largely because the 4Runner drivetrain is too outdated for my tastes (plus I tow...a lot). Complaints about Tacoma transmission are overblown. Anyhow, have you thought about going used on the 4Runner? They've not changed much and it would save you some coin.

I find it interesting the 4Runner still has the 4.0 and the new Tacomas have the 3.5. Strange.

It's a great thing, the 4.0 and transmission in the 4Runner is worlds better than the 3rd gen engine and tranny.

Are 2014s with even 123k and 2wd only fetching 18k in GA?

I went from a Tacoma to a 4runner and was overall happy until I rode in a Lexus GX...

The Lexus has similar mileage to the 4runner, significant amount of creature comforts, A V8, fulltime 4wd. Overall an amazing package. Give the GX a shot as its identical to the 4runner but significantly easier to get a discount with.

Plus all the 4runner suspension/wheels/ parts, etc fits on the GX as well!

I was thinking the same thing. I think you could get a decent chunk more than 18k. And $16k is way too low for trade in anyway.

Would it kill Toyota to put a 6-speed or 8-speed in the 4Runner to bump the MPGs? They've become too complacent. I like the 4Runner but will wait to see what 2021 brings.
