Here's the thing. You keep applying a human construct (good vs evil) where it does not apply. Predation/parasitism is not "evil", and herbivory is not "good". They are simply different ecological niches occupied by different species utilizing available resources.

All roles are vital to a healthy ecosystem, extirpation of predators tends to depress diversity and by extension make a system less robust. There are countless examples of this.

Applying morals to nature is foolish, go preach to a crocodile how he shouldn't eat meat and let me know how that goes. It is also my contention that you cannot legislate morality, if you want to advocate for veganism for economic or environmental reasons that's your perogative, but not because you perceive it as "bad".

Right. Without predators you don't have natural selection. The result is what you see in the aisles at WalMart.

So you think our role as predators is healthy for the ecosystem?

I think PETA is trying to get us to quit using that aphorism. It hurts the chickens self image.

The healthiest thing for the ecosystem would probably be a massive worldwide return of the Black Plague. I vote no.

Generally no. Humans are weird, we tend to either over hunt or kill the natural predators and under hunt what's left. There are far too many of us to properly fufill a keystone role.

Juries still out in that lol.

It'd need to be something else, since we know what causes plaugue and how to treat it. It'd help things in the short term but eventually there would be another natural mass extinction event and the game will start over.

When there were 15 million of us walking around on this planet, yes, we were in a healthy balance with the ecosystem. Then we decided that things like pain and death are not exactly the most enjoyable moments of existence, so we invented agriculture, medicine, and automation. Because napping away a Sunday in a la-z-boy recliner appears to be preferable to what out ancestors did, which was to slowly die from tetanus and/or diahhrea.

The downside to our everlasting quest for comfort is that now there are 7.5 billion of us. And that's not healthy or sustainable. All of our problems, too much pollution, too much smog, water shortages, cruelties of mass food processing, problems with farms the size of states, all of it-and I mean all of it- is because there are too many damn people on this planet.

Sadly that's something we can't correct ourselves. Nobody wants to be the dick that murders half the planet. So we're waiting for nature to do it for us. I sure hope that we go out the painless way, which is only possible if most of the population suddenly woke up tomorrow and decided that they were gay. Sadly, nature just ain't that fabulous. Our destiny will likely be a combo of famine and disease.

Anyway, to answer your question, we were, once, but not anymore.

I think that some people need to put down their copy of The Population Bomb and realize that all of the predictions in it were completely wrong...

Do you draw a perfect circle when you draw a circle? No, you don't. It's impossible. Doesn't mean you shouldn't draw circles or that circles have no value since it's impossible to draw them perfectly.
