Fun play on side emblems - red on black

I tried pulling the chrome emblems first, and the doors and sheet metal just seemed to bare to be without emblems. Then I put the chrome emblems back on. I was contemplating the TRD PRO style emblems, but I wanted to stick with the basic Tacoma door emblems.

I had this idea for a while. First I picked up a few black 2016+ side emblems from ebay here-

I already had experience with the side emblem vinyl inserts from @rrentrop at TVDvinyldecals.com, so I ordered some up in red. I pulled the chrome emblems (with the TVD matte black inserts) and installed the black emblems with the red inserts. The eBay emblems are a tiny bit smaller than the factory emblems, maybe 5-10%?, but the TVDvinyl inserts still worked well on them.

I thought the red would pop on the black emblems and match the red/black theme of the bed decals and center caps. The red is a little loud, so I might go to a deeper/more muted red, but overall I really like it.

 

After looking at it for a while today, the red option is just too dang bright. I already ordered some dark red metallic letters, which I think will match the red on the bed sticker better and be more subtle.

 

I’m on the fence about red overlays on my black letters. Do ya have a link for the darker ones?

The color you see above is 031 Red. I just ordered the Dark Red Metallic (369) to replace them.

There seems to be Tacoma emblems from $11 all the way upwards of $50 on eBay. Are the cheap ones to be avoided? I assume you chose SpeezoneLLC emblems for a reason?

 

Not bad. Do you have matching lettering for the tailgate to 'complete the look'?

 

Dark Red Metallic is (368).

 

You have to look for the 2016-2019 emblems, and that are larger, the 13.5"x1". They are still a hair smaller than OEM. A bunch of the emblems are for gen 2s and are a few inches shorter.

 

I agree, reds needs to match if going with the emblem, decal, centercap thing.

 

Dang, you’re right. When I search for 2017 Tacoma black emblems, a bunch come up but they are actually the 2nd Gen. Thanks for the heads up.

 

i think those would look great if the red vinyl was as thin as the black vinyl was on the chrome...let a little more black show through...

I’ve got @rrentrop decals on my chrome and have thought about doing what you did only reverse, spraying the emblem red and re applying new black decals over the red.
Looks good though. From the pic I can’t notice red doesn’t match but I agree make the red match and you have a great unique look there.

Here's the 368 dark red metallic. This color is much more subtle. I have one more idea I'm going to try after this. Stay tuned.
