Kind of unorthodox, but for anyone interested in watching race cars, drinking, and "camping", Grid Life is coming to Colorado at the end of the month.

    Hello!
I just found this thread and I was hoping if you guys can help me out.
I have planned to go and do the alpine loop on the second week of August. I have been checking this site
    https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/sanjuan/maps-pubs/?cid=fsbdev3_002300
And it seems like the alpine loop is not completely open.
Do you think it would be fully open by the second week of August ?

Last year I passed through Silverton/Ouray and I fell in love with the area even more coming from the desert.
I have been waiting all year to go back and I just want to get the most of my trip.

It honestly just depends on how hot it is.
We've only had about a month of good weather, before that it was still snowing.

The reason it's still closed is because of snow pack and runoff.

With how much snow is up there, It's a huge gamble on how long it's going to take to open up.

With how late our winter was, i'll be amazed if we don't have at least a couple of trails that stay closed the entire year.

Would anyone be interested in camping and wheeling around Halfmoon Creek this weekend?

Looking through the various county resources, only Black Bear Pass opening is projecting after July (if at all). So that would seem they expect to get the alpine loop (or at least cinnamon pass opening half the loop) open sometime in July.

So I would check back in another 2 weeks.

@skier @In4aride live out that way and can chime in if they know more.

I am not sure you will be able to ford HalfMoon Creek (given runoff) to get up to Champion Mine/ Mill area and other direction (Iron Mike mine) is almost rockcrawler only to get up the obstacles to get out of creek.

I was up there on foot last weekend and the ford looked maybe doable. I'll walk it first to see. If not, I'm still going to camp up there and do some hiking and photography.
