I have an N fab bar up front with holders attached and yakima powderhounds on the roof for transport. Both work well and don't stick out as far. Although, I wouldn't mind a bait cooler up front.

I have the same CPI Designs rod holder SeaPA shows. I've had it for about 15 years. Except for bending the receiver bar it's been a great buy; I bounced it hard when I drove off a wave cut shelf on the beach. Couldn't straighten the bend with the tools I have, so I had a machinist cut and re-weld the receiver bar. I've used it on the back of an Isuzu Trooper, two Honda Pilots, a Jeep Wrangler. I will use it on the Tacoma, too. The rear mount has the advantages of protecting the cooler and the rods from the gazillion bugs intercepted driving from Maryland to OBX. One downside is you can forget it's there. I backed over a curb and sheared off the bottom of one of my surf rods. One rod, 15 years, not bad. I use it to transport gas cans to and from the filling station, too; keeping them out of my vehicles. It's lightweight, easy to install and remove, and with a locking pin, you lessen the chance someone will borrow it.

I can see the advantage of the front mount on a truck, freeing the tailgate as a seat. What is the downside of the front mount?

I'm using one of these for my fly rods, just saw an email last week from them and they are now making them for spinning/baitcaster rigs

Probably just that the rods obstruct your view some and you also need a way to mount them. Without some aftermarket bumper or front hitch, i think most front mounts are going to require you drilling a hole in the bumper to access a suitable mounting point.

Be cool to see a diy rod box in the bed that allow to close the tailgate. See plenty of tubes but a box is much easier to throw all rods in there instead of sliding them in one by one in the tube.

Assuming you only use 2 piece rods. You could probably just buy a gun case to do this.

The majority of my fishing rods wont fit in the bed with the tailgate up.

I mean it depends on the size of the rods, even with the long bed almost none of my rods fit except for my daughters doc mcstuffin rod lol

My option next probably be the flambeau bazooka tube the larger telescopic version looks to do me good with my bass rods up to 8fr

Thought about that but I like the idea of the telescopic for a fix position in the bed when I dont use it

I love these, just can't swallow the price tag....
There are several companies with something similar, all pricey

That's definitely the biggest drawback. I wouldn't mind that new one since I fish conventional tackle as well - pretty tempting for road trips when I'm normally cramming the rods somewhere on the passenger side of the truck.

Just curious why you attach to the front and not the rear?
