OVTune 3.5L Tacoma Supercharger and Twin Turbo Systems

Has it been covered how any of the systems will effect towing?

 

These twins are awesome. Happy yall 3rd gen guys are getting some boost!

 

I got a kit prior to it selling out. I will sell to highest bidder or buy it now for $10k.......

Change of plans....doing a lexus v8 swap

 

How concerned are you about reliability with the amount of boost you plan? @OVTune

 

Plan is for this weekend, results with various boost levels. (Hopefully. Not guaranteed as I'm bouncing between multiple things ATM)
Then we will likely started a limited pre-order, 3-5 kits.

okay all you with knowledge, including @OVTune - please educate me on the Stage 1 SC. I'm in an emission State (Colorado) and if it passes emission requirements I will be on the train. Need specifics btwn options - won't be going the Turbo route do to emission inspection requirements. When will Stage 1 SC be available for purchase.

 

Depends on the state, and you should reference your particular state laws at hand. However, if you are simply referring to tailpipe emissions, you should be good to go. There is no need to remove the cats, and if you do chose to go with downpipes, you can opt for the highflow cat version.

California for instance would likely be a no-go since the S/C itself is not a CARB approved item, despite (theoretically) passing tailpipe emissions. That isnt to say you couldn't find someone to pass it, but by the letter of the law, you would be in violation.

 

yea CA unfortunately has this little thing called "visual inspection" apart from the emissions test, where everything on the vehicle either needs to be standard OE equipment, or any aftermarket parts that have an effect on emissions must be CARB approved. CARB has nothing to do with making sure the parts are good for the environment, it has everything to do with CA wanting it's piece of the pie. CARB certification is ridiculously expensive for aftermarket companies to get which is why so many of them don't do it.

Case in point...back in the day the TRD supercharger and Magnuson superchargers were the exact same thing, if you had a TRD supercharger you got a CARB sticker with it and could pass CA smog tests. If you had the Magnuson supercharger (same one without the TRD branding) you could not get the CARB sticker because Magnuson didn't pay for it, and you would fail smog.

Although Magnuson did recently get CARB approved

 

With catted pipes both kits should pass emissions (can't guarantee yet though).
As far as California, catted, uncatted, tune kit, turbo, supercharger, intake, exhaust, etc are all illegal.
I believe I read that it will soon be illegal to work on your own car in your garage in California.
And with the tax law changes we may be unable to sell anything to Californians.

 

Cut and Gut 2 cats and weld them around a down pipe lol! Then when they look they see cats when really they arnt actually there!

 

I'm not advocating this, but last year there was a dude in one of the Facebook Tacoma owners groups who was selling CARB stickers along with a legend to reference on how to fill out the entries and whatnot and then you'd print that info in and then put the sticker on your aftermarket parts.

Of course, if anyone ran the numbers on the stickers, they'd come back false or whatever, but that still relied on someone taking the time to run those numbers. Word on the street was that it was a generally successful cheat. Lol

Yup, my Miata failed the visual inspection of the cat even though it passed everything else. I forgot what BS they gave me, something about the numbers on the cat not matching?.. anyways, that’s cali for ya.

I still want the SC though lol.. time to make friends in the smog industry

 

I know someone that has done that too, for the TRD headers...he lost his CARB sticker so he made one in Photoshop off an image he found online and it passed haha. But the techs do cross reference the CARB verification # on the sticker with their database, at least in my experience they have

 

But then you'd fail the actual emissions test lol

 

Risky business, but whatever works, I suppose! Glad I don't have to deal with any of that..

 

That's already almost a thing in Sacramento county. Recently read an article about the various restrictions which are proposed and involve your vehicle not being inoperable for longer than a day, even if it's in your garage, tools used must be "common" tools, which is very vague, and you can only work on vehicles registered to that address and yourself, meaning you can't work on a friend's car, among some other stuff. Article referenced some proposals that would impose further restrictions as well

 

Sacramento is making illegal in their county to do "heavy work" on your own vehicles, basically simple stuff like oil changes is OK but they don't want people doing major services that leave vehicles on jack stands for days on end, and stuff like that. I agree though it is BS, should be able to do what I want with my property on my own property.

Luckily it's just a Sacramento thing right now, but I won't be surprised if it goes statewide eventually.
