TRD Sport vs Off Road

Only reason I opted for the OR was for the manual. I would have aimed for a lower trim if there were more configurations with the manual. With the transmission discount, an OR came out to about $60 above the MSRP of an SR5 4X4 Auto, so it was a no brainer.

I was off put by Toyota's choice to make manual guys step up to a higher trim level only to omit a lot of options like JBL and keyless start/doors. But, with the closing price I got on the truck, I really can't complain.

 

Same here... I just wanted manual and 4x4.. and the options were trds... there was a base white trd manual and that’s what I got.. actually I’m glad I bought OR instead of sport... in my opinion it has more capabilities for same price of sport if you negotiate price..

 

The OR, Pro, and any Manual Transmission models have the larger diff.

 

I started off wanting a MT OR, cause of looks and hype on the Internet. Though having had a few WRX’s, I’m not averse to a scoop. (At least the WRX scoop was functional.) I shopped for about 3 months, and it was tough to find a manual OR at least in a color I liked or not optioned out the wazoo to over $40K.

Around these parts I would say there are about even numbers of SR5’s, Sports and OR’s. Except for tradesmen, not many access cabs. The ratio of manual to auto Tacomas for sale must be no more than 1:5, with Sport MT greatly outnumbering OR MT.

When I was ready to buy I looked at and test drove a bunch of Sports and was about ready to pull the trigger, just dickering on the price, when the salesman I was working with said, you know, I think we might have an OR in CG with a manual at a price you might like. I don’t know why he was holding out on me, but he said the magic words. Good salesman strategy, I guess.

I had not even test-driven an OR MT before, but after a short test drive I was hooked. (It was toward the end of winter and took 30” to dig out from the snow LOL.) It had tech and premium packages. He knocked about $3500 off MSRP, so I felt like I got a good deal. Cement is (thankfully) a rare color, and I get a lot of nice comments about it from people in parking lots.

I don’t remember the ride in the Sport being all that refined, but I’m fine with the OR ride—big and bouncy. Great for Midwest potholed and patched roads. I don’t plan to do any heavy off-roading, just going to camping and fishing spots, but who knows?

My only quibble with the OR MT is the lack of JBL stereo. I would have liked that. Re’ keyless, I’ve read that the reason a key is required is to use the clutch start cancel feature. I don’t know why this wouldn’t work with a push button, but there you are.

 

I'm new owning a Tacoma, but in my 3 month shopping experience I could not figure out why the Sport was priced equally with the OR. The OR is actually a better city truck with the bigger side walls, softer ride AND the extra off road capability when out of town. Sport models have more cosmetics that will get ruined with either driving in city or on trails.

 

Having driven both (as well as SR and SR5) I'll tell you this... When you get on technical tarmac, like windy back roads, the Sport really comes into play, esp with the M/T. It can also tow the most with the AC 2wd auto option, though I believe Toyota just added that setup to the OR options list.

Still can't get an OR AC with a m/t in the US. for some reason....

 

I’ve owned both 2017 sport and own now a 2019 OR. The OR rides the same as the sport on the road but off-road is where the OR shines. Price was the same, the better value is the OR.

 

I think with the OR, you are paying the difference between the upgraded parts and the base parts. Both trucks still have upgraded shocks compared SR/SR5/Limited, upgraded E tune system, leather steering wheel, V6 standard engine, fender flares standard, LED DRLs standard, Projector beam headlights standard,

 

Probably won't happen, either. Shame, because I would consider a newer model if I could get a 6ft bed without having a lifted limo dclb.

 

I went with the Sport. I do very little to none at all off road these days. Maybe some snow or the beach a few times a year but I have a 4Runner that we use for that. I liked the Sport hood scoop, painted fender flares and the OR looked too cheap looking with the black trim. Plus I didn't want the Crawl Control, I knew I would lift it some,add 4Runner trd pro wheels and slightly bigger tires. The OR is still a great off roader but I just didn't need it, want it or repair it when it breaks.

 

TRD Proseur, TRD CAI, TRD Pro exhaust, FN Pro wheels, Bilstiens 5100’s 3rd Gen, Pro grille, TRD Bro badging, and a expensive hood ornament(removable).

 

Sport = a prettier SR5
Off road = a more capable SR5

U want to look pretty or be more capable? It’s a lot cheaper to make an off road pretty then it is to make a sport more capable.

 

Depends on what you want and what you need. I wanted a damn good looking truck. (TRD Sport) Wanted a 4x4 to get through some bad snow. (TRD Sport) Don't need a rock climbing rear locking Off Road...…… I got what I wanted, a TRD Sport. And I could not be happier.

 

My OR DCLB on the right and wifey’s bro-n-law’s Sport on the left. Both v handsome but I valued the crawl control, suspension, rear diff, and lower estimated mpg over the cosmetics of the Sport. Honestly can’t go wrong with either imo though.
