Doug Demuro - Review on Tacoma TRD Pro

He isn't some random guy though. Driving and comparing cars is literally his job and he has close to 3 million regular viewers. He knows a thing or two.

The guy has handled everything from econoboxes to ultra high-end luxury cars and supercars and everything in between, including pick-ups. This affords perspective to say what is and isn't good by industry standards today and considering his fairly extensive experience in modern automotive journalism at this point I'm inclined to lend him an ear.

A Baja team driver is not the kind of guy I want to hear a real-world review from. Someone who's handled every SUV and pick-up on the market today on the other hand is in a better position to say what Toyota is doing well compared to the competition and what they may need to improve on.

 

I dont entirely disagree but it's kind of moot. Look at the top gear guys, they started as journalists not engineers, no penned mechanical designs, no automotive experience but their opinions on cars is well respected. Doug is no James, Jeremy or Hammond but none the less started similarly.

Finally someone gets it!!! It’s not the best, its not critically acclaimed, it’s simply people’s favourite. That’s what the other dweebs and shills don’t get. People love Tacomas, and the reasons why are lost on people who try to apply science to the situation.

 

I like Doug and enjoyed his review, he nailed what most Tacoma owners love about their trucks but brought up some common complaints like the car like nature of the engine and the removal of the drivers side compartment. He didn’t complain about things that the automotive journalists whine about but most truck buyers don’t care about, and he didn’t read off the official doctrine of The Self Hating Tacoma World Tacoma Owners Association. I liked it.

 

I thought he was going to rip it apart. It's good to see that at least one of the big names in Auto Journalism has something positive to say.

 

The idiotic comments people make on his reviews drive me crazy, stuff like "Doug is the kind of guy that eats peanut shells and throws away the peanuts".

 

No, dude, you're missing the point. I bought my truck to be complimented, and a 20 minute glowing review is basically porn. hnnng

 

All the negatives and stupidity is found here on TW, in wish I pay no attention too, most of them (trolls) don't even own a 3rd gen. You will find thousands of great reviews outside this forum regarding the 3rd gen and thousands more buying them everyday. I know I LOVE mine and puts a smile on my face day in and day out!

i think its cool when he reviews odd ball rides, older cars you dont see or have a following and explains why they are desired.

I'm 6'2 with extremely long legs for my height, and I don't like the lack of thigh support the seats give. I'll eventually get new seats but I can deal with for now. That's my main complaint about the truck, but, in a perfect world (and with unlimited money) I'd buy a 4Runner for rear seat space. Wife said no to that pretty quick.

I've actually met Doug a few times, he lives near me in San Diego, promise you thats not the case.

What you're picking up on is the fact that as he moves mainstream he's given special access and invitations by manufacturers. So although he regularly criticizes vehicles, even on this Tacoma or checkout his review of the Type R at a Honda event, it has to be measured. He can't just all out rag on a new car as that manufacturer would likely not invite him to future events and prevent him from making videos on yet to be released models, which is important to his followers. Plus I'm sure he'd tell you himself that there really isn't any new car that deserves to be all out ragged. This is not the 80s/90s when there genuinely were some TERRIBLE new vehicles, today there really aren't any genuinely bad new cars worthy of a scathing review, everything is fairly good, some stuff is just better than others.

Like I still think the new Colorado sucks, but compare a 2004 colorado to a 2004 tacoma and you're looking at a genuine POS vs an iconic small truck. 2019 Colorado vs 2019 Tacoma, although I obviously still prefer the tacoma, I can't say the difference is nearly as vast.

As for the $ with his amount of followers and views on Youtube alone he makes plenty of it. Plus he still contracts with Autotrader, so theres no need for him to secretly take $ in some autojourno/MFG conspiracy, it would ruin his REAL income stream if it came out and MFGs don't do that anyways.
