I haven't tried the A/C in months, and found it not getting cold. I did find the clutch not engaging, and proved that the relay was bad. Now the clutch is operating, but still not cold. I did use a can to charge the system and brought it up to 40psi from 0 psi. However while running, the psi slowly is dropping to under 30.
Would it be safe to say the compressor seals are dried out and causing a leak?
Next step? Dealer? And what cost are we looking at?

Possibly. I would take it to a shop. FYI, it's a hassle cause you gotta take out the entire dash to get to everything. take it to a good shop too. my AC went out in my 2011 and the shop i took it to did not do a good job. what was like a 2-3 day job turned into 3 weeks, cause they kept trying to sweep stuff under the rug and not "fix it properly). It's also a little pricey so be prepared for that. I wanna say it was around $800 for me.

I live down in the south and we run our AC (house and car) like 10-11 months out of the year. Can't go too long without it

OP, do not let this ^^^^ post scare you away. Rarely do you have to take the dash apart and it is usually because the evap. is leaking and in that event yes the dash has to be removed but in most cases it does not. So find a shop with experience in auto A/C and go there. There are a number of us here who strongly encourage DIY work on our trucks but the A/C system is not one of them unless the work is limited to replacement of seals and hoses and the easier things for most beginners.

YIKES! Take it to a shop that specializes in AC. Be sure to tell them what you did.

Just had the compressor replaced in my '08. Local shop was reasonable, damn chilly now! I'd checked fuses & relay. Shot of 134, but the compressor would kick on & immediately off. Time for the pros to take a look.

No. It would be safe to say that you need to find the leak, if there is one, and repair it. Otherwise you are just throwing money at it.

Taking the evaporator out is a big deal. Don't assume the leak is there, again if there is a leak.
OP doesn't provide enough info to get a good internet diagnosis.

It may be a little time consuming but its money in your pocket to use the search tool here . Thats how I found my issue. It was not easy but eventually I found my problem and learned a little along the way . Many threads on this forum alone and then their is google .
