    Yeah.
I've only used Shimanos, and they are adjustable. I always loosen them all the way and then tighten to 3 clicks. It's a good starting point, and you can adjust from there -- they will go way tighter but obviously not much looser, but best to start out loose. I just leave them at 3 clicks. Then you have to figure out shoes, lol. I have used the hard-soled shoes, and I keep a pair around for races, but I like the 5-10 Kestrel Lace shoes for regular riding. Not as stiff and efficient, but much better if you have to get off your bike and scale some rocks or something.

I was looking at Crank Brother Candy 1 with Cranks Bros easy release cleats. They are plastic (or whatever they call that material) double sided pedals. And they are $40 on Amazon. So worst comes to worst. I’m only out $40 for pedals. I was looking at the 510 Kestrels myself. I like the idea of having some sole as well for the hike a bike situations. I have 510 free rider pros for my flats and they are awesome. My biggest complaint with flats is I’m constantly having to adjust my foot placement. And I feel comfortable saying clipless eliminates that.

    Yeah.
Yeah, I never understood why shoes like the Kestrel aren't more of the norm. Most of the times that I need to unclip quickly is going slow up technical rocky sections, and putting a foot down on rocks with hard plastic soles (especially if the rocks are damp) is just asking for an ankle injury or bruises. The Kestrels at least have some stickiness to them. Unfortunately they are a bit expensive and seem to never be on sale, but I've had mine for a while and they are still like new (when I clean the mud off).

The Candy is a good option, having the cage helps position the pedal for clipping in and protects it from getting bashed on rocks. I've seen several smashed Eggbeaters. I've always gone with ones that have a platform, and once they came out with the XT Trails have stuck with them. Crank Bros has good options with even larger platforms.

Am I correct in assuming that clips keep your foot in the same position? Unlike flats where I’m constant having to reposition my feet. I know that may sound dumb but like I said I’m clueless with clips. The kestrels are going to be the biggest expense. But 510’s are worth it.

Yes, they keep your feet pretty secure. It actually freaks me out a little coming from flats, even with some very sticky pins.

You'll like the Kestrels. I just started using them, and they are quite comfortable. Work well with my Mallet-Es as well.

NEW (to me) BIKE DAY! Well, yesterday, but still. Trek Stache 9.6

Needless to say...it's fast. Don't let the 29+ rubber fool you. Hit a loop I have done many times and destroyed prior attempts.

Not sure about the Candies but I ran the Crank Brothers Egg Beaters for awhile and didn't like them. Just not enough surface area on the pedal so any time I was out of the saddle (downhill, technical terrain, etc.) my foot would flex a lot and fatigue. You could mediate it with a real, really stiff shoe I guess. The candies have a little more surface area but still not as much as a Shimano. Just my experience.

Yeah, the egg beaters are def a saddle up and grind XC pedal. I really like my Mallet-Es because of the platform size.

I’m starting to lean more towards the Mallet E. More surface area and just a little more money. Buy once cry once. Rather than going cheap first time around and still having to buy some better ones eventually.

    Yeah.
There's a certain amount of "float" meaning the angle of your feet on the pedal, but still centered on the clip. Beyond that angle you will come unclipped, but your foot stays pretty much centered over the clip. No side-to-side or front-to-back movement. You can pull up on the pedals as well as push down, which some claim is the big advantage.

Congrats! I have a 9.7 and love it -- I got one of the first new Staches that showed up at the LBS a few years ago, loved it, so upgraded last year. They are fast and fun and climb like a goat. When I was new to this area I followed a guy down a local downhill flow trail (not the right bike for it and had never been down the trail, so I was squashing most of the jumps) and my Strava time was in the top 10 percent. Not really a trail you go for speed on, but it's obviously a fast bike if it lets me get down a hill that fast!

Do any of you guys run the CB shoe shields? It says for carbon soles shoes. Which I don’t believe 510’s are.
I am still researching pedals but I keep gravitating towards the Mallet E’s due to the large platform and just all around good looking pedal. As well as the 10 degree release cleats. Just to start off with. Then I could switch to 15/20 cleats that come with the pedal. Thoughts?

    Yeah.
Sounds like a good plan! You probably don't need the shoe shields with 510's.

I just bought my second set of Mallet-Es for my new bike today if that gives you any indication. I think 10 degree easy outs are the best cleat for flat pedal riders trying to convert. I feel plenty locked in and get all the benefits but worst case, I can still kinda panic flail my way out of the cleats if it gets too much and my brain short circuits.

Yeah that says something for the pedals. I think I’m gonna go ahead and send it. Gonna stew on it for a couple more days. And try and sneak it past my gf.

I’m reading that with clips you use less quad and more hamstring. Any truth to that? My quads are still killing me from a ride 2 days ago. And it wasn’t a out of the ordinary ride.

Could be. Because your trailing leg can help pull up the pedals to augment your down-stroke and that force would be pulled through hamstring tension.

I do notice that my legs don't burn as much on the climbs being clipped in and I have been led to believe it is due to using both legs.

Backcountry is selling Mallet-Es for $115 right now if that helps any.

I found them on Amazon for $109. I appreciate the heads up though.
