Advice sought on purchasing a 2019 vs 2020 Offroad...

    Hi all,

I don't post much, but lurk quite a bit.

My wife and I have been driving an '08 Prerunner (4cyl, manual) and it is the best car I've ever owned. Completely reliable and impressively capable. We have been in the market for an upgrade: We'd like 4WD and more modern features.

So this week we walked into a dealership and found a 2019 TRD 4x4 Offroad that we really liked. Manual tranny (which is a must), Cement Grey with a bunch of black accents (which is our favorite color), and leather interior (we really like vs our old cloth seats in the Prerunner) with moonroof (meh). Double cab. We negotiated it down to 38K which we felt was a decent price for this vehicle and put down a $500 (fully refundable) deposit.

Obviously I didn't do my due diligence because only the following day did I discover the press releases on the 2020 - and their upgrades. They are compelling. I had already budgeted in extra money for a CarPlay compatible head unit and an aftermarket grill. The 2020 comes with CarPlay compatibility standard and the slightly updated grill is more tolerable to us. But there are other, more important updates:

The power driver seat could be a big deal. At 5'10" (and my wife at 5'5") have a complaint with our Prerunner that the driving position isn't high enough to allow us to see over the hood adequately in more challenging offroad situations. We hope that the new seat might allow us to get higher in those situations. This is not guaranteed, however.

The ability to open the passenger side door by touch seems like a really convenient feature.

The optional camera upgrades sound great - though coming from an '08 without a backup camera at all, even the 2019's camera will be huge.

So... Wait or buy now? I called another dealership to ask about the 2020 and dates aren't available yet - they said no vehicles have even been allocated to dealers yet and even when allocation takes place, actual delivery is longer. We're in no rush, but the bigger question is, is $38k for this 2019 (which we really like) as good of a deal as it appears? Also, when the 2020 comes out, will negotiating good deals be harder (perhaps until the 2021 is announced?) or will it be pretty much just like negotiating 38k for this 2019?

Any and all input is welcomed!

2020 has multiple upgrades done to the tacoma. New headlights and creature comforts such as electric adjusting front seats. I believe also a front view camera on offroad and pro models. Go to toyota.com and check it out

I'm aware of the upgrades hence dilemma: They are upgrades that interest us, but perhaps aren't "game changers".

You're definitely not going to get a good deal on a truck that is in its first year of refresh, especially with all the new little features. As for the seat, you can get rear seat spacers that a couple of guys on here sell. I'm 6'3" and installed them and it's awesome so I can imagine that it will be perfect for you and your wife.

One worry I have seen people voice on here is regarding the new headlights that will probably be part of a tech package with the power seats on the 2020 model. They look just like the new Rav4 headlight design which has been given an IIHS score of "poor" due to the fact that they hardly light up the road at all.

Unless the $38k includes TTL, you can definitely get the price lower. My TRD OR was $34k out the door so with the premium package you should be able to get close to $35.5k out the door. If you're really in no rush, I would wait until 2021 to buy a 2020 or early 2021 MY truck. By then, the prices will have settled down and you will get the chance to actually test drive one and see the new features!

Based on your post alone it sounds like you want the 2020 but just don't want to wait- for a truck that you'll have for many, many years I think waiting would be the best option.

Downside is -- more new fancy gadgets, more crap that can go bad/break

The 2020 has all new redesigned LED headlights. I also believe the 2020 off road and pro trims come with a 360 degree view camera system all around.

I do think it will be much harder to negotiate the price on them until they’ve been out for a while (or until the 2021’s are coming out, but then again many say 2022 may possibly be a whole new generation or facelift.

The 2019 definitely seems like a good deal to me. I paid just under 45k for my 2017 Off-Road double cab with Katzkin leather seats, 4x4, full tech package, etc.

I’d be all over that deal you got there! Lol

    Great advice all...

But hyphur, you got yours with premium package for $34K out the door and aleriance, you got yours for 45k? Yikes, still not sure if 38k is a good deal or not!

Double Cab TRD 4x4 Off Road with Manual Tranny, Leather/Moonroof, tech package, and some BS we don't need (Predator Steps, Tonneau Cover, etc). 38K.

Good to hear confirmation that negotiation of a new model release will be difficult at first: Every vehicle we've bought has been around awhile so we haven't encountered this before.

No, I did not get the premium package as I did not want leather and the moonroof. However, I did get the automatic transmission which brings the price up a bit. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to get your truck for $35.5k OTD. Maybe 36 with the dealer added crap.

The upgrades are gamechangers. You may not feel it now, but to us that have owned these vehicles, these upgrades are substantial. Wait for 2020 and pay a little more. Im sure 90% of us who have 2016-2019 would want to do

I'm pretty much in the same boat, except I havn't put any money down on a 2019. I want an OR DCSB,and I was planning on getting a 19,until I saw the 2020 and the decent upgrades it will have. I know for sure that I will be waiting for 2020. In my eyes, once they come out,the 19's will be discounted enough to move them. If I can't get behind a serious price hike that may or may not happen with the 2020's,I'm sure I can snag a 2019 for a decent price. IMO I wouldn't pay more than 36k-37k. Check the fine print with any add ons you do not want that gets the price higher. I would tell em to take it off if you don't want em.

There weren’t enough significant differences for me to postpone and wait for 2020’s to roll out. Love my 19

$38k is a pretty good price with premium package and tech package included. I paid $38k and change for my MY18 OR with premium and tech packages and that was cheaper than I could find anywhere in the PNW. Prices vary depending on where you live. If it were me, I'd wait for the 2020 for the upgrades.

I'm pretty sure they won't take off the upgrades (tonneau cover, predator steps, etc) because those are port added items. I was told they couldn't sell me my truck without the tonneau cover as it was part of the "package" added at the port of entry.

Wait, when those 2020 come out you will be in much better shape to make a great deal on a 2019

This is correct. I asked to have the Tonneau Cover removed... instead they just discounted the price an additional $650 (cost of Tonneau Cover) and are giving me the Tonneau Cover for "free" - I'll attempt to sell it, but doubt I'll make much money on it.

Given all these responses I think we're going to go back in to the Dealership once the vehicle arrives and see it in person, see what kind of financing we get, and see what they'll offer us for the trade-in (though our current plan is to sell the Prerunner on our own). If those numbers are all really good, or if they come down further from 38K now that they know we're thinking about the 2020, perhaps that will make the choice easier. If the financing/trade-in/further discounts are all ho-hum, then I think we're leaning towards just waiting... It's a gamble I know, but even if we have to wait ~9 months or so for the 2020's to be released and on lots for a bit, and we don't have quite the negotiating power then, I'm hoping it won't be *THAT* much more $$$ (ie 1 or 2 grand more...).

I bought the same truck sans moon roof but with a tonneau cover for $36K. Personally, I’d wait for the 2020 and see if I liked them better. And even if you don’t necessarily, you will get an even better deal on ‘19 because they are going to need to move them out...

I just read this post of the add on’s. That doesn’t sound like a terrible deal but I bet you can get even better if you wait till the 2020 comes out.

I have a hard time calling them "upgrades" if they are not standard. Toyota is going to make you pay for those features. They have already said that the LED headlights and power seats only come standard on the Pro. Plus, the light output on our trucks is higher than the LEDs on the Rav4 and the new Tacoma LED headlights look exactly like the Rav4 bulb housings.
