Go hog hunting in the Georgia swamps and track a wounded hog thru the cane and briar thickets and you will get some up close and high intensity pistol practice you will never forget. Crawling on their level with a 45 colt or 44 mag in your hand makes for some interesting times. Black bears don’t hold a candle to a wild hog. Seen a big sow or boar put a bear up a tree several times.
But I still love camping out down in the swamp. You will not see any crowds. Too wild I reckon.

so you are essentially advocating military training just to go for a hike.

Again, just making noise seems more practical...

I always heard it as "How to tell a black bear from a griz: Climb a tree. The black bear will follow you up, the griz will just knock it down."

No I'm advocating people to actually get some real world training other than just shooting at paper, you are reading to much into what I am saying. Being prepared and able to handle not only your firearm but yourself in stressful situations is key. Yes making noise to let animals know you are there and possibly avoid them is great but if that doesn't work and you find yourself staring down at a charging bear or other animal just shooting a gun into the ground doesn't always work. There are many instances where someone has done that and still got attacked. Plus that kind of training helps with situational awareness, among other things. There are a lot of things that people assume having never taken a course or trained like that.
Truth!!!! We are getting them more and more up here in NC. Our Wildlife resource commission has been proactive and put them on open season 24/7/365.

Yes I am a collector and not just a shooter. I collect antique and old firearms as well as have newer stuff. Plus if you get into Class 3 or NFA stuff that gets expensive. I enjoy the history and stories of old military firearms and what some of them could tell. For example I have an old Mosin Nagant sniper variant with a lot of hash marks on it. I can only assume that those were there to mark kill shots, but without the provenance it's only a guess. Kinda like any collectible.

If you just want something to carry and for protection that can be had easily and cheaply.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but I would get a good set of AT tires, something like KO2. Then I would get a portable tire compressor like a VIAIR. Being able to air down with some good tires would help in a lot of situations then you would be able to air back up once you get on the main road.

I assume you're referencing my statement about a noise maker, I wasn't meaning to say that shooting into the ground was what you should do; of course, shoot the thing!

I saw there is a company that offers (I think) a 2 day firearms course with an actual trained bear. That's a pretty cool idea, and is certainly better than pew pewing at paper targets.

I'm just saying that unless you have extensive and consistent training in this type of high stress environment (the above training really should be the minimum), enough that it becomes a "brainstem movement," your chances of being effective aren't as high as you might think.

    Thread derailed? Firearms, hiking, training?

Your last statement is spot on. But there is no way in hell I am going to go to a training course with a trained bear in how to defend myself against one. There is just so much wrong with that.

I go to at least one long weekend training course a year and have access to property that I can "run and gun" and induce fatigue/stress into my training. Plus I compete in local PRS matches.

Hey, if you want realistic training, how much more realistic can you get? But I'm with, you, I'd skip it. I went to this animal reserve in West Yellowstone, and they had a 1100# Kodiak griz, and even though it was human conditioned, and was in its own area separated by a large "moat" and fencing that would stop a plane, I still got a little jittery. That's a big effing animal. No thanks, lol

That's awesome, bet you have a blast! (see what I did there? lol)

Not necessarily specific to our convo, but just I see a lot of times where I'm reminded of the phrase "to a hammer, every problem looks like a nail". I see a lot of problems that people seem to think the only way to handle it is more guns, fewer trucks, or pick any other contentious subject people like to fight about, lol... One of my favorites are the people who have never lived anywhere but a dense city think there is no reason whatsoever to own a pickup truck and everyone should ride share or own shoebox electric cars. Those people are hilarious to troll, I mean debate.

It's not a real thread until Godwin's law in evoked.

we can start talking about balljoints to make it really interesting!

I guess for TacomaWorld, Godwin's law should really be for balljoints, not Hitler analogies...

Well then let me tell you a story of how as a teenager I chased a moose down in a river with a motorized canoe like a moron and well survived!!!

Ohh wait I survived cause it turned around and started coming at me and I turn around and ran like a little bitch with my with my lil motor!

Also a few years before same place chased a little black bear into the woods with a stick cause I was a badass bo wielding ninja then lost track of it looked to my right and about 15 feet away there it was! Went “ohh shit” and proceeded to run back to camp and hunker down in the truck with my cousins we did lock one out for giggles, hind sight no wonder why he don’t talk to us no more. Waited until adult supervision returned!

    Moral, don’t be an idiot!
