Clean install! and Nice Radio! I don't have any D-STAR repeaters in my area, but my club is going WIRES-X, so the Kenwood was swapped for the Yaesu.

    As much as I understand I didn't reinvent the wheel, I'm a happy camper!:D
I finally looked into SMS through APRS , and successfully sent and received SMS messages via SMSGTE.
Just another way to communicate with the outside world in case lack of cell reception ( as long as I will be able to hit up an APRS repeater)

The FT2D connects to the tablet with specific usb and audio cords, to be controlled by the Wires-X software. Tablet connected to internet hotspot.

    That's neat.

I'm surprised Yaesu didn't provide some method for painting YSF targets on a map. The group monitor mode is an excellent function. I should be able to take that geo-data and paint it on a moving map. They didn't need to design the entire solution. Just give me a serial NMEA stream of data with the lat/lon, and there are plenty off COTS solutions existing.

    GM boys,
new to the forum and to Tacomas. Not to HAM though. Ki6GXC. I'm an avionics and radio guy for the City of LA helicopter fleet.

Anyway, looking to get ideas on how to mount a radio or two and just jump into here in general.

I mounted my head on overhead console, have the transceiver in the whiskey bottle holder and the mic routed up behind the dash. Lots in my build thread "Electronics" links.

yup. Can't believe I let it lapse. Totally slipped my mind.

I never got that courtesy mailer from the FCC. I'm retesting here in a couple weeks though. Give me plenty of time to find a way to install a new rig in my new ride.

Right now I have two repurposed radios from work here. I hacked an old motorola MAXtrac on 2M, and a Motorola CM200 on 2M. I think it's time to jump into the next gen though.

Where are the favorite places for antennas in these trucks? Is the world moving toward NMO?

I put mine where it works. o_O
Seriously though, I prefer center top cab but found it hard to balance a good antenna with garages and tree limbs. So I played with left/right center cab. I did not see much difference in transmit distance. I then tried forward or back and did notice better distance when cab forward (likely the front end mass is off center and the correlation to ground plane).

So mine is off center (right) cab forward NMO.
