Trip planning from IL to CO...looking for a stop for a night in the middle

    Planning a trip from IL to CO in the near future and I am looking to break the drive there into 2 days since it is a 14 hour drive. I am looking for suggestions for a good place camp for a night somewhere in Nebraska. Sure I could find plenty of campgrounds on the map, but I would like to get some input from the members here as well. I will be taking my son(15) and nephew(16) who both enjoy the outdoors. I am not looking for a Jellystone or KOA type campground….. open to dispersed camping.

    Find a cornfield? We normally stop around omaha and grab a cheap hotel. Or we drive the entire way. It's not bad to drive thru.

    Last year we drove straight through with 2 drivers, on the return trip we stopped in North Platte and stayed in a hotel.

    Check out Lake Mcconaughy State Recreation Area. It's pretty far towards CO, but it's a pretty cool place and it's right off 80.
