    Not my tranny it’s my buddy’s with a first gen Tacoma. His clutch went out and they found this. Any ideas to fix it? 029AF567-5FFB-4FE9-8AA1-400350049C1F.jpg

    Looks like it wore the race down, old bearing probably siezed. If it runs like that even with a new pilot bearing it'll likely wobble and take out the input shaft bearing sooner than later. I'd either have the input shaft swapped, or I'd have the input shaft clad welded and turned down to spec on a lathe. Putting that back together as is, is asking for failure.

    Yup, I’m sure it’s a failed pilot bearing.
    Probably didn’t put an OEM one in last clutch job.
    Pretty sure you can get a new input shaft. Probably cheaper to just find a used low Mileage transmission for 400-500.

    So if the input bearing is chirping all the time, is this a likely result?

    If your input shaft bearing is chirping constantly you're headed right for major transmission failure. It's constantly being splashed by oil. I'm guessing you mean the shift fork bearing or "throwout" which if that's chirping something is misaligned but most here just ignore it as normal instead of trying to fix it.

    Kind of, I'm not really sure to be honest. For the longest time everyone was saying that the neutral 'cricket chirp' that goes away with the clutch pedal pushed in, was the throwout bearing. Then I starting reading that it could actually be the input bearing and that the TOB does the opposite (makes noise with the clutch pressed). Don't really know what to believe, but I do have the notorious cricket chirping that is most noticeable at idle/neutral, that seems to plague many manual trans Tacomas.

    Comes and goes, when I got my clutch replaced 2.5 years ago it was gone for maybe 10k miles then started up again. Like most people I just ignore it, just curious if I'm ignoring a possible bigger issue by doing so.

    Thats what I was thinking when I bought it, but it has to be wired to the ECU. So that part didn’t end up working. I absolutely love the gauge and all the settings it has

    Ah okay that must be where I got confused, I think I read your earlier post about it having that feature but didn't know you weren't using it. Sounds like a cool gauge though

    It absolutely is, yea it was like 8 months later that it got installed from when I bought it.
    So my tacoma ECU wasn’t compatible for the model I bought.
    The newer Tacoma ECU probably is compatible.

    Here’s the info I posted somewhere else on this Gauge.

    It was easier to copy and paste this info on the gauge , :)


    Finally got my Innovate SCG-1 Gauge installed.

    This is the coolest gauge!!!!

    First of all it’s actually a boost gauge and an AFR Gauge in one, so one pillar pod is all you need.

    This gauge has the option to set as a boost gauge only or an AFR Gauge only.

    You also have the option of have both gauges showing at the same time with the larger display as your choice of being the AFR or the boost.

    You can toggle either gauge at any time to have either boost or AFR as your leading gauge.

    It also shows the vacuum as part of the boost gauge.


    It also has a button setting that shows the top boost pressure you have run. This clears each time
    you turn the motor off.

    It also has a warning display that says “02 CUT”

    This display pops up on the top right corner whenever the AFR is out of its safe zone running lean.

    The gauge also let’s you set the AFR warnings limits.

    So let’s say you set the warning “02 cut” at 13.5 and the AFR under boost goes over the lean number of 13.5 or higher it will give you the warning “02 CUT” display so you know something is wrong with your setup, (running lean)

    The gauge works fantastic!

    The failsafe will not actually cut the boost because our trucks are an older design, for a newer truck
    the gauge when it goes into the “02 CUT” (lean area) it would actually stop the boost from going higher.

    It also has a light is the guage that tells you when to shift, but that part doesn’t work on our older truck.


    So now I will always know what’s going on with my AFR and boost at all times.

    You should be able to use the shift light feature pretty easily, that's almost universal. The tach signal is a square wave and all you have to do it tap it and tell the gauge it's a V6

    I dont think you're ignoring anything major. A tech at a local tranny shop told my dad that if it chirps with the clutch depressed, then you have issues. I feel like an input bearing would fail much quicker then a throwout bearing too.

    Sounds about right given what I've read on here over the years, I'll just continue to imagine there's a colony of crickets occasionally hosting an orchestra in my transmission

    I have never ran across a thread where anybody reported catastrophic damage from a TOB, most usually catch it before hand thanks to the noise when the clutch is pressed, and apparently it gets really hard to shift.

    When the main input shaft was going out in my 94 Nissan Hardbody 4x4 MT it would make a steady noise while driving through all gears except 4th(4th is the direct gear), no noise while driving/moving if in neutral. I'm far from expert, but from what I understand and have read, what I describe is the most common shared symptom that drivers describe.
    It doesn't sound like that's what you're describing to me, is it? If what you're noticing it isn't what I describe, sleep easy :D

    This is exactly what my trans is doing now. I'v driven it for about 3000 miles like this. Every thing iv read is it's the input shaft bearing. Going to do a tranny swap next week. Hope it fixes my issues.

    I got the 234-2003. Mine failed during the commission of a clutch job. The downstream you linked to compatible with a auto & manual? Anyone know?

    Is it advisable to go ahead & replace the downstream? Or wait til it goes tits up?

    my neighbor got a brand new 2019 car. He came to me and asked me to help him understand all the gadgets, thingamajigs, modes and functions the car can do

    Let me tell you I am glad and proud to have my little 1st gen. No gadgets, no electronics and no fancy things... Just as simple as can be.

    I'm wondering if in like 20 years all these gadgets and thingys built into cars today will still work....
