my factory door speakers are starting to sound real bad, so I’m ready to upgrade.
Any suggestions of brands or pointers?
    I also don’t know what size I need. I have a 2009 double cab
I have an aftermarket headunit, pioneer avh-200ex, for what it’s worth.

Unless you want to add an amplifier, pay attention to RMS power handling and high efficiency. That’ll give you the best result off a head unit.

I’ve used Alpine and Infinity in the past. Love Infinity but you have to have a way to dial the tweeters back a little since they are a little bright.

Thanks for the help. How do I watch the Rms and high efficiency?

Check the specs on the speakers and compare them. Crutchfield makes that pretty easy.

Efficiency is usually termed “sensitivity”. Higher means more volume given the same power input.

What numbers do I want to be looking for? What is considered too much for not running an amp?

No hard answers unfortunately. Most head units are putting out 25 watts rms or less (often less, less again clean undistorted power), so a speaker with a high RMS requirement will obviously not be a good match.

Higher sensitivity (use this spec to compare one speaker to another, not to say “above this number you’re good”) will make the most of the limited power you’re delivering.

I’ve run speakers off a head unit, and I’ve stepped up to components, amps, equalizer, etc. A four channel gives you a lot of power to drive speakers, and with appropriately matched and set up speakers can sound amazing, but careful selection can net a good sounding system without the complexity of an external amp.

    Speaker Sensitivity:

    0-85dB = No thanks
    86-89dB = Meh
    90-94dB = G2G
    95dB+ = Unobtanium

If you don't add an amp, then speakers designed for 0-50 watts will be better than what you have. 90dB & up in sensitivity works best.
