I have a long time relationship with my dealer and was able to test drive the 2016 for the whole afternoon. In the end I bought the 2013 for almost the same price as the 2016.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
    .
...^^^... My mileage is not nearly that good and I normally get 15 - 18 in the city ... but I don't allow the truck to bog down.

I drive by the tach in S and try to keep the vehicle in the casual 2200 to 3000 RPM range if possible.

This truck, with this auto transmission requires a more active driving method IMO ... but many of the newer vehicles with 6 speed gear (and higher) auto transmissions due hunt and constantly shift the gears .... exceptions are perhaps CVT transmissions and ... not sure about dual clutch transmissions.

Load it down with whatever in the box close to max, drive it...smooooooooth. Its a truck with a trans designed as a max load work horse...Love my Limited. Sell it and buy a car! Like the song..."be happy"!

Haha no it’s not. It’s a midsize grocery getter. Anyone who would describe any gen Tacoma as a “max load work horse” has never sat in a full size truck. I love it but I know what it is.

I can somewhat relate to the OP, I have a 2019 DCSB with the MT and when I first got it I thought I made a huge mistake; even with the six speed it was surprisingly slow and sluggish, but I thought, whatever it fits in my garage, car seat fits good, normal sized adults can sit in back without issue and i'm inexplicably getting 21mpg around town. If I had gone on a longer test drive, I might not have even bought it. But i'm glad I did because after about 2 months and 2k miles, this might be the best purchase i've ever made. Maybe it needed some break in time I don't know, but it has a completely different feel now then it did at first- nice smooth shifts, not as sluggish, and still good MPG.

Does it still have its flaw, yes, but thats what makes me like it more. I had a Lexus GS350 before the Tacoma, with every feature they made, it handled great, was fast, but I hated it because it had no personality. This truck has plenty of personality.

The dealer where I bought my 16 is near the coast in Maine. flat, real flat. I went for an 8 mile ride and I didn't know the area. Cut the deal they made it ready and they even drove it to home.. Home has steep Mountain roads. it 'WAS" horrible . But it is no longer horrible and I like it a lot . Did it learn ?

I guess, but my question is where’s home in Maine? I used to live in Jackman.

Between Jackman and Sault Ste. Marie, MI, I’ve had enough snow and ice to last me a lifetime. Now I’m down here playing in the sand with my Taco and all is good... :)

I do miss all the water and brook trout though... :(

I have switched to only Sport Mode and ECT power. It runs great!! Around town I don't push to 5th. I leave it in 4th max when I push it to Sport. I just leave it there. Throttle response is instant.

While it sounds like old news on TW, with Tacoma beating sales record every month this year, it isn’t old news for a lot of first-time Tacoma/3rd-gen buyers.

    This.

It's been posted over and over again.

ECT and S mode. This tranny has essentially two OD gears.

    Don't like them?

    Lock them out.

(cue assholes who will complain they should not have to push a button or be bothered with enabling the S mode)
