    Lots, straight from the factory.
So I didn’t look, because I thought four wheel disc was just standard these days, but is there some reason I don’t know of, that Toyota would still be using drum brakes on the rear?

I just about fell over when I noticed they weren’t disc.

The Truck stops in the same distance as it's competitors in the mid sized truck category and they last a long time.

According to Toyota, it's better for offroad.

Also according to Toyota, don't offroad :p

LOL, I bought a mid 90's Ford Escort for my wife so I could fix the engine on her Saab 900. The escort came with 4 studded snow tires, and I bought wheels and tires for it for summer driving. When I took off the rear wheels there were drum brakes, which was astonishing to me as a x foreign car tech of that time. Something about the drums looked familiar, and so I took a power wire brush to them. Lo and behold, they said LUCAS ! Then I knew the last time I had seen these drubs was on 1959 MGA English Sports cars. Talk about old new stock !

I don't like drums because they have a much higher maintenance requirement. The self-adjusting screws almost always fail, shoes are nowhere near as performant as pads. Working on drums suck, with all sorts of springs, levers and pins flying all over the place.

Pads with calipers is a walk in the park.

I just finished converting my Jeep to all discs. I should also look into doing the same for the taco. Need to research what would be a donor. Maybe 4Runner, Sequoia?

It is what it is. I was initially surprised but I moved on with my life. I know they are slightly more involved when doing the brake change but I think I can get through it.

Not a bad idea. As long as it’s not pricey

They are cheaper, that's the only reason. Close thread.

You both drive 2019 trucks. How soon do you honestly see yourselves working on the drums?

I'm honestly going to look into it. I was quite surprised with how easy it was to do the Jeep. Just took some will power on my side. I went to the junkyard and sourced parts myself. Online kits were $600.

Instead, I did it all myself for less than $100. Unsure if the Toyota will be the same, but I bet it will.

Are drums the devil? Meh, not the worst. However about 20 years ago I slammed my brakes on an emergency stop and both rear wheel cylinders blew out, losing all my brake pressure.

The only thing that saved me from plowing into the car ahead, I was luckily in the right most lane and I turned right into the curb using it to stop the truck.

Yep, older tech, but drums have been stopping cars and trucks for decades. Sure I'd rather see discs on the rear but don't feel unsafe or that they will cause any excess maintenance issues, so I just drive, press the brake peddle when I need to stop. Seems to work just fine.
