3rd Gen - Rear Drum Brakes???

“Hey Toyota........how ‘bout you pass on some of them drum brake savin’s to the little guy......when we buy these gosh-darn Tacos”.

The should be able to reduce the price by at least tree-fiddy.

 

Does anyone have a newer vehicle with 4 wheel drums? Them drums are da bomb!

 

This is very true. My 20 year old TJ sometimes requires a shoe adjustment to keep the handbrake working. But that's about it. It does not have the automatic adjusters like the Tacoma.

Do I like drums? Not really. Do I care that it has them? No.
But it's nice to have a handbrake that's very strong and can be modulated.

 

Drum brakes are not better for riding offroad. If you have ever dove through a creek with drum brakes you would know they are useless after getting submerged. Drums fade a lot quicker too when going up and down inclines. This is from personal experience.

Good thing we've got discs on the front then eh?

 

Never had an issue with rear discs with an internal parking shoe.

 

The reasons are, in order of importance to Toyota:
1) Cost (The KISS principle in full force here and engineering costs)
2) You are not going to notice the difference in performance. In a truck capacity they perform well and are long lasting.
3) Most importantly, the Market is not requiring Toyota to change the design. They sell way too many trucks.

 

MOST most importantly dat sweet ass hand brake.

Stating again for the record, drums are more current technology than discs.

 

This talk about brakes is nonsense - I prefer just hitting things in order to stop.

That's why steel bumpers are popular on our trucks, right?

 

Those baby brakes are fucking worthless. Anybody all about that life can go back to sedan world.

I better sell the TJ. It's done plenty of creek crossings at Rausch Creek and I'm clearly on borrowed time.

Did you have to put your feet through the floorboards Flintsones style to get it to stop?

 

You haven’t needed a real parking brake off road I guess.

Here is my challenge to you:

1-Find the steepest slope you can think of. Something beyond what they engineer for city streets (IE somewhere in the bush)

2-drive halfway down or up this scary slope and stop.

3- put the Tacoma in neutral, with the engine running, and apply the parking brake.

4- walk away from the Tacoma, and try to imagine it had one of the various lightweight gizmos they use to simulate a parking brake with a rear disc system.

5- find a photo of Mike Sweers and kiss his hand.
