I’ve logged over half a million miles between my 3 Tacomas, and have never even had to touch the rear drums. 295k on my 1st gen, 200k on my 2nd gen, and 28k on my 3rd gen. The first 2 were beaten to hell, hauled and towed on a regular basis, and experienced mostly city driving.

Usually a front caliper (discs!) seizes up and then I don't have to do anything at all besides let off the gas.

Disagree. I've had my WRX on loose, steep slopes where it was a struggle to stop and stay stopped even with all four wheels (the service brake). Once I got stopped, the parking brake held the car just fine. Did all sorts of offroading on trails I had no business being on in the 13 years I owned that car. Also used the handbrake frequently on dirt and gravel roads to get the rear end out on turns. Never had to replace or adjust the internal shoes.

Anyways, how do all the other pickup manufacturers manage to make an effective disc-with-drum for the rear? Or is the Tacoma the only truck that sees "real offroad use"?

My ford has an effective electric parking brake, but it is either on or off, it doesn’t allow you to modulate the force applied.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks

    Cheaper.

However, you won't need shoes till close to 100k, and the drums won't need turning then in most cases.

Just pull the drums off when you rotate tires, hose everything down, visually inspect, dab a little lube at the proper points, and make sure the adjuster is free.

If you're too lazy to do it at tire rotations, do it at least once a year when you do similar maintenance to the front calipers. And if you live in snow country, the end of winter is a good time.

Caveat. If you off road a lot in harsh conditions, more frequent attention is needed on both F & R to stay up to snuff.
