Rear Whine

Just purchased a 19 Tacoma and it has around 5 or 6 hundred miles total. First Taco for this 67 yr fellow. I seem to have whine on deceleration and I,m thinking it may be the differential. Anyone else have this problem??

I have experienced whine at various speeds, many others have as well; I had the rear diff inspected with no fault. There are a variety of discussions about it on this site that have been going on for years with no clear solution for everyone.

Bottom line, in my opinion, is that it is just one of the quirks when it comes to these vehicles. If Toyota's engineers have not found inherent mechanical flaws - and without the hundreds of thousands of 3rd gen Tacomas not imploding on the roads today - it should not be something to be concerned with.

 

There is a TSB, you are correct that the noise is from the differential. Certain trucks have it worse than others due to harmonics, my understanding is the fix toyota will perform is a spacer or rubber block to break the resonance. If it's a new truck can't hurt to have the dealer check it out. You'll also hear it if you go between light and no throttle at highway speeds.

 

I had no idea it was this prevalent. I hung up my wrenches and the thought processes that went along with them many years ago. On the bright side my hearing is pretty bad. It doesn't take much for me to ignore it. I'll have it checked though to make sure it's paper worked. I'll be watching for a fix and will post if I solve it. I'm thinking it may have something to do with the driveshaft carrier bearing. All these rears can't be bad for so many years. Somethings putting abnormal vibration or stress on them. Just have to have someone with brains figure it out. I even get some vibration in the steering wheel under load.

There's nothing wrong, it's just gear whine. The fix is to change the metal to metal noise conduction. This is what the rubber spacers are for.

I haven't had the fix applied to my truck, it doesn't bother me.

 

Have your dealer check TSB 0013-18. It addresses that. New rear frame isolators do a good job and reducing the whine.

 

Give it a 1000 miles first

 

I've owned and driven a whole lot of vehicles in my time but I've never had one vibrate in the steering wheel on acceleration. Anyone else have this? My last truck was a Tundra and I'm starting to wonder if I made a mistake by going down in size. The MPG on the new Tundras is horrible driving my choice to the Tacoma.
