3rd Gen - Rear Drum Brakes???

Not all Rear Discs have that internal drum style parking brake, my car simply mechanically squeezes the pads, works quite well too.

 

Drums are fine. All I’m saying is my 2016 Nissan Frontier had discs all around, so Toyota???

 

Where is the substantial proof that drums are less expansive than disk? As far as I can tell, there is more parts involved on drums than disk. To this day, disk manufacturing has surpassed drums technology for decades. Perhaps is the opposite, drums are expensive to fabricate then disk however are still used and more efficient for larger (cargo) trucks, military etc. Not to mention drums are better for off road than disk. Disk were mainly invented for race cars to reduce heat etc. MHO.

 

In bold - A common myth quoted by drum beaters. Over in Europe where regulations on large trucks are tougher they run discs on them. Drums are cheaper that's why Toyota uses them on the Tacoma.

 

Because Toyota will sell all their trucks easily with drum brakes. And thats just the beginning of issues....

 

What issues? Brakes are supposed to stop the truck and they do it fine.

I'm cool with my rear drum brakes. I love my 2.7 and 5 speed manual transmission! Old school works for me.

3/4 and 1 ton trucks have 4 wheel disk brakes. They used to have rear drums years ago but disk are a lot better for hauling. They cool a lot better with less fading over harder use.

 

For everyday driving there is nothing wrong with drums but when it comes to off roading and towing disk are better. Toyota will probably go to disk in the rear in the near future just surprised they haven't already.

 

Again, once there is proof that they are "cheaper" i'll believe it, otherwise is BS to me.. If there was a problem with drums, they would have been discontinued them a long time ago by FMVSS. I'm not biased on either, im happy whether the truck came with drums or disk. My argument is based when someone says something is "cheaper" with no proof of evidence. Last time I checked im in USA not Europe.

 

I've only replace rear brakes twice on my '96 Tacoma in 413,000 miles.

 

good thing you won't have to mess with these, then. a friend of mine has a 2005 2nd gen taco with 160k miles on it and has done the drum brakes once in 14 years.

 

Why don't you look it up? It doesn't take long to find the answer that yes drums are cheaper to manufacture than disc systems.

Master heavy here. Regs in Europe aren’t tougher, and drums are never going away in the foreseeable future.

I am pretty sure a rotor and caliper are more costly than a shoe and drum, however for the consumer, replacing rotors is less costly than replacing drums, at least that is how things have gone with my '91 Dodge Cummins that I have owned since new.

OTOH drums last longer than rotors and rear brakes do less work than front brakes.
