What do you mean by controlable?

Even if I’m going 1mph, and i touch my E-brake, they’ll instantly lock up until the truck stops moving.

I knew going in that my Taco(s) had rear drums, and that's one of the things I don't like about them. My FJ (all disc) requires a lot less pedal pressure to do the same braking job.

The '60s panel van parking brake on the dash is another thing that irks me, but I see Toyota finally got rid of that.

Not true about ratcheting rear disc ebrakes. Been plenty of designs over the years that have rear discs and a ratcheting ebrake. 4Runner has it.

The big deal IMO with a rear disc ebrake is: Does the ebrake use the disc pads, or does it have a drum for the ebrake?

4Runner has a drum ebrake along with the stopping brakes which are discs. There are vehicles that use the stopping disc brake pads as the ebrake, no drum added in. The '05 Tundra, I was looking at a rear disc conversion, the kit used mid-90's Ford Thunderbird rear discs which use the disc pads as the ebrake, no drums.

I have a VW Eurovan with rear discs, has a hand lever ratcheting ebrake, no drum for the ebrake, there's a pin attached to the cable that draws the disc pads together onto the rotor.

That's the best design IMO, you have a ratcheting ebrake with a hand lever and it uses the disc pads.

Toyota could do the same, but if Seatbelt Mike says all is good that's fine with me.

Get outta town. 4Runner has a pedal actuated parking brake, which is not equivalent to the hand operated parking brake on a Taco.

The beauty and advantage of the Tacoma system is it is operated by hand, leaving both feet free, and if you hold in the button, does not ratchet, so you can modulate it.

The 4Runner parking brake is identical to what’s on my wife’s Camry, and is total garbage for use in the situations I describe, especially if you are driving a manual transmission.

When Toyota gets rid of drums, it’ll probably mean the end of the MTs.

Well yeah, the Runner has the leftfoot ebrake, but still it's a manual ebrake on rear discs.

I understand your point about a hand ratcheting ebrake with a release button like the Taco has, 1st gen had the same.

Still, IMO, the ideal setup is rear discs with an ebrake that uses the stopping pads. It ain't all that difficult, but Toyota sells plenty without doing so.

Pretty much like the ridiculous front diff 10mm Allen drain/fill plugs. Unanimous opinion is they suck, but Toyota has churned out the same since about 1964. Doesn't hurt sales apparently. Every 4WD Toyota I've owned be it Taco, Tundra, 4Runner the same ridiculous 10mm Allens on the front diff drain/fill plugs.

 

Tacoma's would suck with out the rear drum brake slap.

On my 1999 in 125,000 miles I changed the front pads 3 or 4 times but I never needed to change the rear shoes. I'm okay with rear drums on the 2016.
