so i bought a used 2011 trd off road with the jbl system. the previous owner installed a jl audio dual sub system and amp. what i’m not sure about is - what’s powering the door speakers? the head unit?

Look behind the passenger side back seat against the back wall. If it has the JBL system, there should be a little silver amp back there somewhere. Normally would be mounted on the factory sub enclosure, but if they took the factory sub out, they may have relocated the factory amp, but I would imagine it's still back there somewhere

If it’s for sure the JBL system, an amp is powering them. The factory JBL head unit was low level outputs

If your JL amp is mono, there's your answer. What model is it?

it’s a kicker amp. i know the factory sub and sub amp are gone. i just wasn’t sure if there was a second amp for the door speakers or if they were powered by the head unit.

Only thing I can think is there's a microamp stashed somewhere in the dash, or your OE amplifier has been relocated.

so head unit provides no power in these model of trucks? it’s the multi disc changer if that helps.

If the headunit has a JBL logo, it provides no power to the speakers.
As Dolby said, may have been relocated (harness lengthened, etc) or they might have a alpine powerpack or similar stashed somewhere and re-wires much of the truck. Only time and digging around will tell. I’d pull the radio and see what’s going on back there

If I remember correctly the stock amp is under the center arm rest/storage unit. It’s been 5 years since I played with my trucks audio.

Pull the console. It is on the floor under the bin. My guess is it is for the sub. Good time to install a spare USB port.
Also pull the head, there is an amp under the control head I believe it’s for the doors.

This is where my power inverter is. You sure that's an amp? I thought the JBL amp was mounted on the JBL sub box.

But if all of that is gone, you have some searching to do

Not sure. Just had it apart recently. That makes sense. There is also a sub box mounted to the JBL head that is likely the door speaker amp.

I think anything mounted to the JBL head unit is going to be for NAV or maybe SAT.

If you were working on a ‘17 (just going by your profile thingy) then that separate box is the XM tuner

Nice. Total piece of shit. I can’t go a mile without drop outs and signal loss. Even in winter with no leaves on trees and I live at the top of a hill. I can’t believe anyone pays for XM. They gave me months of free service credits and promised engineering was working on it for my zip code. Nothing but crap.

Yeah I have XM free (I’m a dealer/installer) and I literally never use it. Besides the crap signal, it is AWFUL sound quality. Super compressed, even compared to FM radio and Bluetooth.

I still install 2-3 units a week though. People still go for it for talk radio, sports, and most importantly, the NASCAR channel
